These children watched their school collapse from a field nearby during a powerful earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, in July 2013.
They survived because they weren't in school. Summer break had just begun.
They were extremely lucky.
We don't want to count on luck to save lives.
In 2014, we will be designing schools that are earthquake- and typhoon-resistant and teaching local builders and engineers to build them. Nearly 75% of schools in earthquake-prone parts of Indonesia are not safe during earthquakes.
Thank you and best wishes for a safe and happy Holiday Season,
