Online Shopping's Rapid Growth:

Online Shopping and Mail Order Businesses Jump 27 Percent, Census Bureau Reports

Electronic shopping is showing rapid growth compared to the rest of the retail trade sector, with the number of establishments growing 27.4 percent between 2011 and 2012, according to new U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Drawn from County Business Patterns: 2012, the new data provides the only detailed annual information on the number of establishments, employees and payroll for nearly 1,200 industries at the national, state and county levels.

The number of electronic shopping and mail-order houses grew from 23,697 to 30,185 between 2011 and 2012. Employment climbed 13.7 percent to 365,508. In contrast, for the retail trade sector as a whole, which includes traditional "brick and mortar" stores, the number of establishments rose just 0.1 percent, while employment climbed 0.7 percent.

"Unlike traditional stores, which are located throughout the country, online shopping establishments and jobs are in concentrated areas," said William Bostic Jr., the Census Bureau's associate director for economic programs.

Census Explorer: Retail Edition, the latest version of the Census Bureau's interactive map, gives users easier access to neighborhood statistics and shows the geographic concentration of electronic shopping and mail-order houses.

Reversing a four-year decline, the data show that the total number of U.S. businesses with paid employees grew by more than 77,000 establishments to 7.4 million in 2012, an increase of 1.1 percent from 2011.

The greatest employment increases in electronic shopping and mail-order houses were concentrated in counties within Southern California, the New York metro area, Chicago metro area, and other metro areas such as Memphis, Tenn. (Shelby County), Las Vegas (Clark County), Grand Rapids, Mich. (Kent County), Columbus, Ohio (Franklin County) and Minneapolis (Hennepin County). In addition, two counties in North Carolina (Guilford and Wake, home of Greensboro and Raleigh, respectively) and one in Missouri (Clay, near Kansas City) also had large gains in employment for this industry.

Other geographic highlights:

  • Among the top 50 counties in the United States by number of establishments, Travis, Texas (Austin) had the largest percent increase in establishments with a gain of 4.2 percent, or 1,206 establishments. Hennepin County, Minn. (Minneapolis) had the largest employment rate increase (6.6 percent), or 52,844 workers.

  • For the second consecutive year, North Dakota led all states in employment growth, at 8.2 percent, and led in percent increase in establishments, at 5.3 percent. This parallels the Census Bureau's population estimates, which showed the state led the nation in total population growth over the same period. In North Dakota, employment growth was driven by the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector, as the number of employees rose 34.4 percent and establishments, 23.8 percent. This sector led employment growth nationally as well, with an 11.7 percent increase between 2011 and 2012.

  • Combined, California, Texas and Florida accounted for more than half of the establishments added between 2011 and 2012. In contrast, these three states accounted for one-quarter of all establishments in 2012.

  • The number of paid employees in the U.S. rose by 2.2 percent between 2011 and 2012; this represented an increase of more than 2.5 million employees. Texas, California, Florida, New York and Ohio led all states in number of employees added. The number of paid employees in Puerto Rico rose to 690,597 in 2012, an increase of 2.5 percent over the previous year. Annual payroll totaled $16.9 billion in 2012, an increase of 2.4 percent.

  • Industry sector highlights

  • Retail trade had the highest total number of establishments of any sector in 2012 (1.1 million), while health care and social assistance added the largest number of establishments over the year, at 15,157. Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services added more than 476,000 employees in 2012 to lead all sectors, an increase of 5.1 percent.

  • Nationally, the manufacturing sector added 1,578 establishments (an increase of 0.5 percent) and nearly 208,000 employees (an increase of 1.9 percent).

  • Annual payrolls nationally grew in all industry sectors; the overall increase was 4.8 percent to $5.4 trillion.

  • County Business Patterns excludes business owners who were self-employed, employees of private households, railroad employees, agriculture production workers and most government employees. County Business Patterns statistics by five-digit ZIP codes will be released in June.

  • The Census Bureau will begin, on a flow basis, to release results from its 2012 Economic Census Industry Series, which provides a richer, broader picture of specific industries than County Business Patterns, including information on product lines, revenues and inventories.

Mentor Profile - Judy Reinhold
by Mike Toland
Judy Reinhold's recent history is a terrific illustration of a SCORE success story, and a fulfillment of our organization's purpose. In 2010, Judy and her husband sought SCORE mentoring assistance for their new business venture which eventually led to Judy herself giving back to SCORE as a valued mentor and workshop contributor for the entrepreneurial efforts of others.

Judy's life story is compelling and reflects her resiliency and fierce determination. Born in Detroit, her father's career with Dun and Bradstreet led the family of five on a peripatetic path, moving 7 times before Judy completed high school. It must be mentioned that Judy's Dad was a true American success story, rising from a clerical entry level position to the presidency of Dun and Bradstreet, a Fortune 500 company. While attending high school in Wellesley Hills, NJ, Judy won the lead in her school's drama production, then went on to attend Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. Judy shared a large house with 11 other girls, while pursuing her nursing credentials. Her sole collegiate regret is the prank she pulled on her housemates which consisted of filling a candy jar of foil-wrapped chocolate covered insects (which taste like a Nestle Crunch Bar) and watching her friends' shock and revulsion upon telling them the chocolates true composition. Girls will be girls, and her roommates ultimately forgave her.

Marriage to Judy's high school sweetheart, a West Point graduate, came shortly after, and a four year Army assignment in Vicenza, Italy. After a return to the states and upon her own children reaching school age, Judy sought and was awarded her registered nurses license, and began her own professional career in the ICU Burn Unit of Loyola Hospital in Maywood, IL. After 11 years at Loyola, Judy took a sabbatical from the healing arts and opened a party supplies/rental center business with her husband in Orland Park, which they operated for 12 successful, enjoyable years.

Following her husband's passing, Judy returned to health care with Sunrise Assisted Living in Downers Grove. Being a single nurse tending to the needs of over 100 residents had its challenges, particularly the relative frailty of the patients. Falling was the most significant risk facing her patients, and Judy was concerned by the downward spiral many patients took after suffering a spill, which impacted their independence, balance and triggered anxiety in performing the simplest of tasks. Judy had married Ralph, an aerospace engineer with Northrup Grumman, who suggested they build a system designed to assess, track and archive balance and range of motion profiles of her patients, helping facilitate the earliest intervention of physical therapy and balance exercises.

Excited with this concept, Judy and Ralph decided to launch their own business, which led Judy to contact SCORE for start-up and business planning assistance. Richard Funck, Rod Randall and Jack Curley of SCORE provided much of their time and business acumen in those formative stages, while Judy also tapped into the resources of the SBDC for additional counsel. David Gay of the SBDC urged Judy and Ralph to have their product assessed by Wisconsin Innovation Service Center (WISC), and their positive review and in depth analysis helped immeasurably in being awarded grants from the National Science Foundation and the SBA. The Law and Entrepreneur Clinic of University of Wisconsin - Madison also provided countless hours of pro bono legal advice and business counsel. Jack Curley of SCORE, who served as point mentor of Judy's SCORE team, recalls that "Judy and Ralph Reinhold's business concept was among the most promising I've had the pleasure of working on in my time as a SCORE advisor."

Kaliber Imaging was incorporated in 2010, located in Elgin, IL. The Mobility Monitor Assessment System (MMAS) is a 3D portable imaging system used to objectively assess and track range of motion, gait and balance. Ralph and Judy were awarded a patent for the device, which provides objective data on their mobility versus norms, and allows for timely intervention. Judy serves as President of Kaliber Imaging, while Ralph Reinhold is the firm's Director of Science and Innovation.

As mentioned previously, Judy's experience with SCORE has come full circle. As a client, she "can't say enough of SCORE's value to her company". Through the collaborative efforts of SCORE business mentors, the SBA, the SBDC, WISC and other key organizations, Ralph and Judy have attained their goals and gained professional and personal success with their company, Kaliber Imaging. Starting in 2010, Judy devoted whatever time she could as a SCORE member, developing a successful Social Media workshop and serving on the Professional Development Committee of the Elgin branch. When business at Kaliber demanded more of her time, Judy was forced to curtail her SCORE activities. But as of this writing, Judy has returned as an active SCORE member, and looks forward to helping out with seminars, workshops and continuing her professional development efforts. With her return, SCORE is no doubt a stronger organization.

Judy can be reached at (847) 493-9354 or Judy@kaliberimaging.com.
