Presentations, What Really Matters?
by Kiersten Fordemwalt - Consultant

First, think about the words:

Content                Message

Which is more important? The message.

Which do most presenters spend more time on? Unfortunately, it's the content.

Why? Typically when we present we are talking about a topic we are experts on or at least know quite a bit about. When we know information we tend to share too many details. Too many details equals too much content.

Separate Content from your Message. The message is what your audience needs. To find your message answer the following questions:

  1. Who is your audience?

  2. What is the audience's issue? What do they need help with? Where are they now? What do they need?

  3. Where do they want to be or what do they want to be able to do ideally?

  4. How will you get them from #2 to #3? Basically how are you going to get them to where they want to be? (This is the Message)

These questions get you to your message. The message is what is important. Many bad presentations happen when the presenter focuses on content.

   Employee vs Independent Contractor
Wednesday April 16, 2014 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM CDT

There is a lot of confusion and mythology regarding employees vs. independent contractors. There are significant risks and penalties to labeling an individual incorrectly. It is incumbent on the employer and the worker to understand the distinctions between and limitations on each category. This workshop is for new and middle-stage entrepreneurs.

Rita Riordan - Mentor Profile
By Mike Toland

Entrepreneur, scholar, world traveler, author, teacher, equestrian - these are words that only partially describe Rita Riordan's varied roles in business and life.

Born on the west side of Chicago and raised in the southwest Chicago neighborhood of Clear Ridge, Rita was brought up with her two siblings by successful, enterprising parents. Rita's father, an optometrist, started the optical departments of the Wieboldt's and J.C. Penney retail stores, and Rita's mother, an artist and teacher, contributed to the 1940's war effort by drawing field maps critical to the success of bombing missions over enemy sites.

A graduate of the experimental CPS/Archdiocese high school St. Paul/Kennedy (2 graduations, 2 proms), Rita went on for her undergraduate studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU), which prepared her to be an English teacher at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park for several years. A lifelong love of horses also led her to be an equestrian instructor while competing herself. During this period, Rita also helped her Dad in his business, tackling the administrative and lab management aspects of his growing optometry businesses.
