How have Christians conceived, constructed, and related to sacred space over the centuries? What does sacred space mean, what might it become in an age when many people no longer affiliate with organized religion? This series is intended to help us reflect on sacred space including Grace Church as we develop our master plan for renovations, but also as we think about what it means to be "the church on Capitol Square."

914 East Knapp Street

Schedule

3 p.m. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori

4 p.m. Open roundtable discussion and refreshments

5 p.m. Choral evensong, with prayer and readings - All faiths are welcome

Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori has earned a PhD in oceanography and a Doctor of Divinity degree, which makes her uniquely qualified to be an advocate for environmental and climate issues.

She testified to the U.S. Senate on climate change and its impact on people living in poverty in the U.S. and around the globe, stating, "No life form can be studied in isolation from its surroundings or from other organisms. All living things are deeply interconnected, and all life depends on the life of others."

As a scientist, she understands links between global poverty and the need to address global warming.

Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori is author of the book, The Heartbeat of God: Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything.

Foyers Foray
Can you believe there were close to 52 people who came out for the Grand Foyer Meal this past Sunday.  What a turnout!  Thank you to everyone who worked to organize and set up for the meal.  It was a wonderful kick-off to what hopes to be another year of very meaningful small group get-to-know-yous that build strong parish ties.  If this paragraph has piqued your interest and you have know idea what foyer groups are, please e-mail Chere Gibson for details.

Annual Episcopal Church Women's
Winter Luncheon
Saturday, February 2nd
All women (members of Grace, friends of Grace, friends of friends) are invited to gather in the Guild Hall at Noon on Saturday, February 2nd, for socializing and to enjoy a delicious meal which will be prepared and served by the men of Grace.

The Luncheon will be followed by a special dramatic presentation called "The Woman Jesus Called Mother". It will be given by Maggie Rowe who has acted over 200 performances of this original spiritual work. It is a one-woman, one-act drama of the life of Mary of Nazareth and will be given in the sanctuary of Grace Church. Our own Lynn Morgan will provide a vocal prelude. According to those who have seen it, the program is very moving and not to be missed.

We are anticipating a large turnout.  Please make reservations in advance so we can be sure to accommodate everyone.  Reservations can be made by sending an e-mail with the number in your party and, if you require childcare, the names and ages of your children, to:  Jane Henning at shennin2@wisc.edu or (608)  238-4089.

See you on 2/2/13 at noon!

Comic English Country Novel next Book Pick
Dear new folks, considering folks, and Grace Book Groupies,

The next meeting of the Grace Book Group will be on February 11, 2013, at 7 PM at Zoe Richardson's (e-mail me for directions).  We will be discussing Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford.

[Copied and combined from several reviews]:
Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, née Stevenson (29 September 1810 - 12 November 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Brontë. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and as such are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature.  Her witty and poignant comedy of country-town life, provides a gently comic picture of life in an English country town in the mid-nineteenth century. Cranford describes the small adventures of Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two middle-aged spinster sisters striving to live with dignity in reduced circumstances.

Copies are available in the public library or you can buy a copy from Amazon.com for $2.50.

Public Presentation given by

Flint Sparks, PhD

Psychologist and Zen Buddhist Priest

Waking Up to Who and What You Are

The Natural State of wakefulness is who you are. Wisdom and compassion is what you are when you live from the Natural State. We most often live in states of delusion and distraction based on the distorting and contracting forces of our past conditioning. We become so accustomed to this way of living that we consider it "natural." We declare, "this is who I am!" However, your True Self is actually the Natural State and waking up to this reality and engaging in practices to embody and integrate this awareness is the essence of the spiritual path. Softening the contractions of past conditioning is also the focus of most depth psychotherapies. This evening will be an invitation to consider the possibility of this profound shift from the dream state to wakefulness. We will consider how we can all wake up to who and what we are within the context of our everyday life. In this way we can discover the freedom inherent in the Natural State.
