A note from the Smiths

Dear People of Grace Church,

We want to thank you for all of your prayers, thoughts, and support these past several weeks. Thanks especially to Fr. Jonathan for his pastoral response this past weekend when Steve was in the ICU: for praying with us and blessing Steve, for bringing communion for family and friends and for the of healing  prayers on Sunday.

It is working! Steve saw his oncologist on Sunday and Dr. Hei seemed hopeful for a cure. Steve has another test soon, probably followed by surgery. So, please, continue to hold us in your prayers and thanks so much for your thoughts and support.

The Season of Advent

"The days are surely coming, says the Lord,
when I will fulfill the promise I made to the
house of Israel and the house of Judah."

We enter the preparatory season of Advent this Sunday, December 2.  The 10 a.m. service begins with the lighting of the Advent wreath by the Saffiotti Dale Family.

Name:
Francesco, Tom, and Maria Saffiotti Dale

Members of Grace since: 1999

Our family hails from:
Good question! Madison has been our home now for 13 years. Tom and Maria were living in New York City before that, and they grew up in London, Ontario, and Bethesda, Maryland, respectively.

Favorite childhood Advent or Christmas church memories:
Francesco: Singing Christmas carols and going to see reindeer.
Tom: Advent lessons and carols service
Maria: Christmas day Mass with an orchestra accompanying the choir

Why Grace? welcoming community; solid Anglican tradition of music, liturgy, and preaching; outreach.

When it's time to pick a bed-time story we like to read:
Santa stories (Francesco)

If our family could play hooky for a day from work and school we'd
...

Francesco would like to ride on a deer, while Maria and Tom would like to walk in Owen Park or paddle a canoe on Lake Wingra.

Our favorite family Christmas tradition or food:

Christmas dinner (Francesco); cutting our own tree and decorating it while listening to Christmas carols or early music recordings of great choral ensembles.

One thing no one would guess about our family:
That Tom is an ardent ice hockey fan and likes Gordon Lightfoot, and that Maria likes James Taylor's music.

An Advent Message from Jonathan

Advent is a season of preparation for Christ's coming. Traditionally that preparation took a penitential form as Christians were asked to focus on Christ's Second Coming and were urged to repentance. Now our preparation for Christ's coming more often takes the form of planning and buying for the holidays. We are focused on Christmas even when the Church urges us to focus elsewhere and the Church's teaching and preaching may incite guilt in us for our very natural desire to share our love and joy of Christmas with those around us (and to prepare appropriately for the season).

The first verses of the gospel reading for the First Sunday of Advent strike an ominous note:

"There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

How many Christians over the centuries have seen in the world around them signs of Jesus' imminent return? How many times have Christians declared the day and hour of the Lord's coming, only to be disappointed? The image in that first verse, the "roaring of the sea and the waves," may sound particularly familiar and ominous to those who lived through Hurricane Sandy and are still suffering in its aftermath.

In this passage, Jesus calls us to be vigilant, to be alert, to look for signs of his coming. The problem is that signs are often open to interpretation. Some aren't of course-a stop sign offers a pretty clear meaning; but when a traffic light turns to yellow? Is a massive hurricane like Sandy a sign of God's judgment, Jesus' Second Coming, perhaps evidence of Global Warming, or just a random event?

Interpreting signs requires careful attention, something that may be difficult in the month of December, during the season of Advent. We are busy with our preparations for the season. Academics, whether students or professors, are focused on the hard work of the end of semester. It's often the case that our lives are so busy we can't find time or energy to look around us and pay attention to the signs of Christ's coming. Of course, on one level, it's impossible to avoid those signs. Christmas decorations and holiday music have been around for a couple of weeks already. But what about signs of Christ's coming in our lives? Signs of Christ's coming in the lives of those we love? Signs of Christ's coming in our daily life? Do we have time to pause and pay attention to that? To pay attention to Christ coming among us at work or school? To pay attention to the ways we might be a sign of Christ's coming to those we encounter and those we love?

My hope is that during this season of Advent, you find opportunities to look for and be signs of Christ's coming.

I've compiled some Advent resource including online Advent Calendars, daily meditations, and downloadable devotional booklets that you may find helpful in this season of preparation:

We need your organization's help with

The Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign

Our red kettles are at over 70 locations around Dane County but we need help to fill more volunteer shifts over the next three weeks.

Have your group Adopt-A-Kettle for a day

Many organizations join us by "Adopting" a Kettle for one day and staffing it with volunteers.  Ringing bells as a group is a great team-building activity.

Contact our Kettle hotline by e-mailing 2012redkettles@gmail.com or calling 608-250-2235 and get a time and date that works best for your group.

In order to reach our kettle goal of $700,000 we need your help now.

No bell ringer means no red kettle. This can mean a loss of up to $50 per hour to help the less fortunate in Dane County.

So if you haven't already, please consider helping our Adopt-A-Kettle drive this year.

It would be greatly appreciated.
