You are invited by the parents of Corinne Amelia Farrow to a special Coffee Hour celebration of her baptism, which will occur during the November 4th 10 a.m. worship.

Our 10:00 Choral Eucharist this morning will include music from Faure's Requiem.

About the Requiem:
"It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death, and it has been called a 'lullaby of death'.  But it is thus that I see death:  as a happy deliverance, an inspiration towards happiness above, rather than a painful experience." ~ Gabriel Fauré

"The starting point for the Requiem was the death of Fauré's father.  This was in 1885, when the composer was 40 years old.  He was organist at the Madeleine church in Paris, where his duties included playing for a constant succession of funerals. "I'd had them up to hear", said Fauré, "and I wanted to do something different."  He achieved this by the wonderful colours [...including ...] a solo violin in the Sanctus and major roles for harp and organ.  It was only later that a fuller orchestration was produced - most likely by someone other than Fauré - possibly in order to make the Requiem more suitable as a concert work."  - Brian Kay

Thanks and fond memories of Ann Simandl whose gift supported the instrumentalists for the Requiem.  Thanks to musicians enhancing the service:
Grace Chancel Choir; Greg Upward, organ; Lydia Eiche, soprano; Jordan Wilson, baritone;  Carol Carlson, violin; Mark Bridges, cello; Meghan Elizabeth Orr, harp.

Trivia Fun
This Sunday during Coffee Hour it'll be your turn to come on down for an All Saints Sunday Trivia Showdown.  Lauren Cochran will hand out the quizzes and whoever answers the most questions correctly will win a $40 gift card from Whole Foods. Second place is a gift card from Fromagination. You will be allowed to work with a partner, but no consulting books or mobile devices with the internet!

Numbers and Figures
Treasurer Stan Kruger will be available during Coffee Hour today to answer any questions you may have regarding Grace's finances or the upcoming 2013 budget. You may also reach him by phoning (608) 849-8920.

Season of Civility

Strengthening our capacity to create community will be the topic of the 3rd and final conversation in our series about the 5 "habits of the heart" in Parker Palmer's book, Healing the Heart of Democracy, meeting at 11:45 a.m. this Sunday in the library.

If there is enough interest, six monthly evening sessions based on Palmer's book will be offered in the new year.  For further information call or e-mail Carol Smith or Margaret Irwin.

Grace Presents the Nefrons!
Noon
image
THE NEFRONS are a 4-man doowop group based out of Madison, Wisconsin, dedicated to performance of a cappella close vocal harmony, primarily of tunes from the 1950's and early 1960's.

If you're a fan of a capella harmonies you're in luck.  If you wouldn't say doowop is your first genre of choice, the way the Nefron's harmonies interplay with stories of vintage Americana just might inspire new-found fan-hood.

All concerts in the Grace Presents series are free and open to all ages.

Your Help Needed on
Tuesday Afternoons
and Thursday Mornings
The reception office at Grace Church is the first contact visitors have with our congregation when they stop in or telephone. The role of the reception office volunteer is extremely valuable in creating a welcoming experience and, if you ask our current volunteers, it is a very rewarding part of their week. If you'd like to try out time in the reception office to see if it is a good fit for you, we are in need of volunteers to fill two open shifts: starting as soon as possible = Tuesday afternoons from noon - 3 p.m., and beginning in the New Year, Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon. Please contact Jody in the church office at: togracechurch@gmail.com. Temporary substitutes or long-term subs are welcome to apply as well!
