This is a resource here in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia to help point out some stewardship themes in the weekly lectionary to make it easier to preach, teach, study, pray and speak about stewardship throughout the year.
Refrain for Trinity Sunday
Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.
The generous spirit of sharing is found in the readings for this Trinity Sunday informing our stewardship of life and love and all that has been given us. In our reading from Proverbs in Wisdom's declaration of her presence at the beginning of God's work, she implicitly outlines God's generosity through the proclamation of God's providence of Creation. Psalm 8 continues the theme of God's providence of Creation with us and sharing the care of Creation with "the son of man." Paul tells us in Romans that God's glory is shared with us through the gift of grace that has been given us by Jesus Christ and in this we are given peace. And in our gospel text, Jesus explains to his disciples that what the Father has given him will be given to them.
This thread of sharing in all our texts this Sunday has profound implications on shaping the steward's heart. In these we hear God's generosity freely giving, freely sharing. So if we truly are created in the image of God, as our Christian theology states, then we are created to give freely and share freely. The providential themes remind us of the source of all creation, "of everything that is, seen and unseen." If we are not the source, then all these blessings have been given to us and entrusted to our care for the good of all. This understanding fosters a heart of gratitude which is more inclined to responsive generosity. The realization of our gift of grace from God puts us in the mind of humility which informs our solidarity with all of humanity. This solidarity encourages us to extend grace to others and the share more generously with those in need. All of these implications are rooted in the Divine Trinitarian Love that is the Glory of God.
This Trinity Sunday I am not so much concerned about the Oneness of God; I am more concerned with the Unity of God that is found in the perfect love of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This love of the Divine Economia (household) is the divine economy that God desires for the world. It is our stewardship of the currency of Love poured out on us in Creation, on the Cross, in the Resurrection, at Pentecost and in our daily lives. It is grace. It is a gift to be shared generously.
How will you share the economy of God's Love today as stewards of God's glory?
How will your congregation live into the image of God found in the Holy Trinity?
