In sheer minutes, June 21 is the longest day of the year. It's summer solstice and prime time for the beach or pool, but for United Way volunteers across the nation, it was also the perfect time to get involved.

On Friday, June 21, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey coordinated a Day of Action - a daylong service initiative that pairs volunteers with projects throughout the county, and region.

In its 6th year, this national volunteer effort has contributed more than 3,000 hours of service in Atlantic County alone. This success is due in large part to a number of committed local businesses and organizations who annually dedicate teams of volunteers to participate, supporting their employees with a paid day to volunteer. In addition, Tropicana Casino and Resort and Atlantic County Utilities Authority sponsored the event and helped cover the cost of project materials. In total, nearly 100 volunteers completed  four projects throughout Atlantic County ranging from a fitness trial rebuild in Brigantine, a thrift store revamp at Family Service Association, a food pantry reorganization at CODI, and a day of sorting through much needed donations at The Women's Center.

recoveryHurricane Sandy Recovery Continues

Nearly nine months ago, Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast, dispensing destruction and wreaking havoc on  beaches and towns. Almost immediately, relief agencies and donations poured in, and a record 80,000 calls for help dialed into the 2-1-1 call center in South Jersey during those first few weeks. UWGPSNJ quickly stepped in and began recruiting volunteers and connecting agencies with donations. In fact, one of the largest local donations was a warehouse space provided by Atlantic County Utilities Authority, in reponse to the truckloads of items that began showing up on the doorsteps of many local relief agencies. Still, this space continues to be used to store rebuilding materials.

And as the transition has been made from relief to recovery, UWGPSNJ has played a key role in the Long Term Recovery Groups (LTRGs) in both Atlantic and Cape May County, acting as the fiscal agent, convener, and conduit of information.  These groups have assembled almost weekly to discuss and outline the needs that exist and the plan for rebuilding homes that suffered almost complete destruction. UWGPSNJ has assisted in securing grants from a variety of sources including the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund - a national fund set up by United Way Worldwide to assist those states along the East Coast that were declared disaster zones following the storm. In total, more than $1.4 million has been allocated to the LTRGs in Atlantic and Cape May Counties to facilitate recovery─ this means making whole those displaced by the storm who lack other funding to make repairs, replacing basic household items, rebuilding parks and community areas that were destroyed, and continuing to provide support and resources to local groups and organizations who are working to speed recovery in their own local communities.  In addition, regional partners have stepped in to raise both awareness and funds, including Enterprise Holdings Inc., PwC, Norman and Suzanne Cohn, and Main Line Health who generously contributed, as well as Subaru, Holman Automotive Group, Inc., and PITT OHIO, who through a two-day drive collected more than 15 pallets of relief items for affected families.
