A date has been set for the fourth annual Power of the Purse luncheon and workshop, presented by the Women's Leadership Initiative of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey in Atlantic County. The event will take place Friday, May 17 at Steve and Cookie's by the Bay in Margate, beginning at 10 a.m. The program is focused on communicating the impact women's philanthropy has on the local community. Tickets are $40 per person.
This year, the event will feature Jean Abbott, CPA, and assistant professor of Business Studies at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, who will present "Charitable Giving: Why, How and To Whom." Abbott will focus on the financial literacy of giving─ educating attendees on better ways to select organizations to support while protecting important personal information in the process. She will identify new technologies that have transformed the way donors give but also introduce new risks as donors share more information over the internet. Her program begins at 11 a.m.
In addition, community advocate and Hansen House founder, Jennifer Hansen, will be recognized as the 2013 "Power of the Purse" honoree. This award was introduced by the Women's Leadership Initiative to honor a local woman who is an outstanding leader, advocate and philanthropist.
Hansen, who founded the Hansen House─ a drug rehabilitation facility located in Atlantic County─ has served as an outspoken supporter in the field of drug addiction and recovery with unyielding devotion. As a recovering addict of several years, she supports many individuals and groups by sharing her own story-offering them strength and hope to face the future. Jennifer also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hendricks House, a substance abuse treatment center for women in Vineland, N.J., and is president of the Hansen Foundation.
