Thank You!
Thank You!
April is "Thank You" Month! This month and year-round, we celebrate each and every one of our supporters. As we reflect on the significant impact made possible throughout the region by our donors, there are no words that can describe our level of thanks and appreciation. We know that we could not work to create lasting change in the lives of community members across the region without you. For every generous donation, every minute volunteered and every act of advocacy...we say, "THANK YOU!"

Because of you, there are more children entering kindergarten ready to learn. Because of you, there are more working adults earning a family-sustaining income. Because of you, there are more seniors able to age in good health with dignity in their homes. Because of you, there are fewer hungry children in our region. Because of you, more members of our communities have access to the building blocks of a successful life: education, income and health. Thank you for making United Way your local partner to drive measurable, lasting impact that none of us can achieve alone.

celebrateCelebrate on April 30th at Bally's AC
Join us on Tuesday, April 30 starting at 5:30 p.m. as we recognize and celebrate the volunteers, donors and community partners that worked so hard to ensure success for this year's campaign.

Among those volunteers is Maria Mento, executive vice president and CFO at Atlantic County Utilities Authority, who will be presented with the 2012 George F. Lynn United Way Volunteer of the Year award. This honor is presented annually to a local volunteer who has shown an extraordinary commitment to UWGPSNJ and volunteer service. Mento has served in a variety of leadership roles for the organization starting with the Women's Leadership Initiative in 2006, and the Board of Directors in 2008. She currently serves on the Leadership Development Committee, local operating Board, and Campaign Cabinet. Maria also chaired the Spring Event in Atlantic City in 2011 - an event that raised an impressive $25,000.

A new addition to the program this year - enjoy a special presentation by award-winning former NY Times reporter and
author Tina Kelley as she shares inspiration from her latest book, "Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope" (Wiley), which she co-authored with Covenant House president Kevin Ryan. Almost Home tells the moving stories of six remarkable young people from across the United States and Canada as they confront life alone on the streets. It shares a snapshot of a larger story in which an estimated 1.6 million young people run away or are kicked out of their homes each year in
the U.S. and Canada. This presentation is sponsored by Kline Construction.

Tickets are $25 or $200 for a table of ten.

sandyUnited Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund Completes First Distribution

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), in partnership with United Way of New York City, recently announced that the first distribution of the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund has been completed and a portion will be used to support families in Atlantic and Cape May Counties most affected by Superstorm Sandy. Grant recipients include two local agencies, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Camden and Jewish Family Service, which will ensure immediate unmet needs in recovering communities are being addressed.

To date, nearly 30,000 claims in Atlantic and Cape May Counties have been submitted to FEMA for storm-related damage, and an estimated 100 residents remain in temporary housing. Immediate needs include rental or home mortgage and utility assistance, and replacement of essential household items such as appliances and furniture. This first distribution of the Fund in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, which totals $423,500, has been allocated to address these needs. Catholic Charities and Jewish Family Service, two local agencies that have been actively serving the needs of victims since the storm hit, were selected to facilitate fund distribution and case management and will report recovery outcomes and other unmet needs as they arise.

In addition, a portion of the grant will support 2-1-1, which fielded a record 80,000 calls for service information in the first few weeks following Superstorm Sandy.

The United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund, which is managed by United Way of New York City, was established to provide near and long-term support to the people whose lives and health were put at risk by the devastating storm. In this first phase of distribution, $5.7 million of the Fund was be distributed to local United Ways across the Northeast who will grant moneys to community organizations that can make the greatest impact for the families still struggling in the aftermath of the storm. Funds were distributed based on a formula that takes into consideration three equally weighted factors: population impact, actual impact and ability to respond. Nonprofits providing support to individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Sandy are eligible for funds to help them recover from damage or to meet the increased demands as a result of the hurricane. This first distribution was completed in early March, with a second phase slated for the end of April. A third distribution phase will take place in June to help meet more long-term recovery needs.

One hundred percent of donations received (less any processing fees charged by credit card companies) will be distributed by local United Ways as grants to community-based organizations providing supports and services that help those affected by Hurricane Sandy recover and rebuild their lives. To learn more about the Fund visit www.uwsandyrecovery.org.

Choose a card that speaks volumes and  support Ready, Set READ!

Access to books is essential to reading development, yet many children from low-income families do not have quality books
at home or in the childcare centers they attend. In many cases, the ratio is a staggering 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.

Ready, Set, READ! is a program supported by the United Way Women's Leadership where volunteers visit pre-school classrooms and read to children. Children are then provided with a copy of the book to take home and share with their caregivers.

This year, honor Mom by providing a classroom of young learners with the the gift of a good book. By supporting Ready, Set READ! you are helping to increase early literacy rates in Atlantic County and better prepare children to enter kindergarten. A personalized card will be sent to the person you wish to recognize as acknowledgement of your gift.

To order, call Amanda McGowan at 609-404-4483 ext 19. Orders must be placed by May 5th to ensure timely delivery.
