   The Caring Circle

   An online newsletter to connect   and inform English-speaking caregivers in the Quebec City region

November 2014

Welcome to The Caring Circle

Welcome to the Caring Circle from Jeffery Hale Community Partners. This free e-newsletter is for English-speaking caregivers in the Quebec City region. A caregiver is someone like you who provides care to family members or friends, whether they be near or far.

The important work of caregiving, be it physical assistance or emotional support, can be both rewarding and challenging. Caregivers can learn from one another and be a great source of mutual support. Through this e-newsletter and activities for caregivers, we help to connect, support and inform. By sharing and learning together, we can enlarge our local circle of care.

Greetings,

November 2 to 8 is National Caregivers Week. Numerous celebrations are being planned across our city and province for people just like you who care for aging loved ones year round. Jeffery Hale Community Partners are part of a special local initiative to honor caregivers on Wednesday, November 5 in the Montmarte amphitheatre (Salle St-Augustin: 1679 chemin St-Louis in Sillery) from 9:15 am to noon. Actor Marcel Leboeuf will be giving an inspirational talk (en français) entitled La passion de l'aidant.

This session is offered free-of-charge and will also provide an opportunity to visit kiosks dispensing information from a variety of organizations that seek to assist caregiverson a daily basis. No reservation needed; please drop by and join us.

Every year, Jeffrey Hale - Saint Brigid's offers you a free vaccination against seasonal influenza. This vaccine is made from inactive virus strains selected by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is very safe and cannot transmit the disease. It has proven to be effective against the major strains of seasonal flu that we fear this winter.

You ONLY need to make an appointment IF you have an allergy to eggs.

The vaccination campaign will run at the following locations:

     Saint Brigid's Home:         November 12 and 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

     Jeffery Hale Hospital:        November 10 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Please note the following:

  • You must wear a short sleeved shirt;
  • Plan to stay for 15 minutes after vaccination;
  • You cannot get the vaccine if you are allergic to mercury;
  • You must bring your health insurance card;

Get vaccinated to protect yourself and others around you.

Insights on Better Communication with Elderly Parents

It's an odd feeling when you start to realize you've changed places in the parent-child relationship. When did you suddenly become the responsable one? Caregiving results in subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle changes in family dynamics. If you're finding that communication is strained,  take a little advice from caregivers who have walked the path before you. Below is a brief summary of their insights and a link to help you learn more.

  • Don't Give Advice Unless It's Asked For
  • Listen to What Your Elderly Parent is Saying
  • Accept Differences of Opinion

  • Speak Distinctly

  • Don't Condescend

  • Choose the Right Environment

  • Consider What It Is Like To Be Old

  • Pick Your Battles
