Catching up with Hall of Famer Rod Laver

Highest World Ranking: No. 1
The Grand Slam: 1962, 1969
Grand Slam Singles Wins: 11 singles, 6 doubles, 3 mixed doubles

Even among the greatest legends of tennis, Aussie great Rod Laver stands out in an elite category of the best of the best. This year, as "The Rocket" celebrates the 50th anniversary of his first Grand Slam, the Hall of Fame had a chance to catch up with Rod for a few questions when he was presented with his official Hall of Fame ring at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

When you were competing, did you have a sense of what a feat you were accomplishing by winning all four majors in one year?

Well, no, at the time, I didn't think of it as going for the Grand Slam. It was the Australian or it was Wimbledon that I was trying to win. I was focused on winning one leg and then going from there. Of course, it was a great moment to have accomplished winning all the titles. I cherished it very much.  Click to read more of the interview with Rod...

Gaby!

Gabriela Sabatini

One of the most popular women's tennis players of her time, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina was also one of the most successful, being ranked within the world top-10 every year from 1986-1995, capturing a major title in singles and doubles and earning an Olympic medal. Fifteen years after she retired from the game, she still draws a crowd, and thousands of tennis fans were pleased to participate in a Hall of Fame ring ceremony that honored Gaby at the Copa Claro tennis tournament in Buenos Aires. "Becoming a Hall of Famer was one of the most beautiful and meaningful moments in my life, and now this ring, it is truly an honor to receive it,"  said Sabatini.   Click to read more about the event, and the Hall of Fame ring program.

Welcoming Tennis Fans From Around the World!

French visitors at the Hall of Fame

"The Hall of Fame is a very nice complex. The Museum is well structured, the collection of different memorabilia across eras leaves such a great impression. We thought it was fantastic that the courts have been in use since 1880 - they have a great tennis spirit! The Hall of Famers are well selected - it is nice to see so many champions representing many different eras and champions. We enjoyed our visit - this was a great museum and staff!

Growing the Game from Spain to Sarajevo: Mr. Juan Maria Tintore

Juan Maria Tintore
Mr. Tintore (6th from left) with tennis fans in Sarajevo.

We all know that tennis has players and fans spanning countries around the world. However it's not just the international champions and worldwide news coverage that has made tennis one of the world's most popular global sports. Behind the scenes, there are many dedicated administrators and promoters who have worked tirelessly to grow the game. Undoubtedly, one of the most enthusiastic and dedicated of these leaders is Mr. Juan Maria Tintore of Barcelona.

Although he's proudly Spanish by birth, the people of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, hundreds of miles away, proudly think of Mr. Tintore as one of their own as well.

For the past 15 or so years, Mr. Tintore has utilized tennis as a platform to help the city recover from its war-torn 1990s. In 1995, it came to Mr. Tintore's attention that the youth of Sarajevo really needed something positive in their lives to help rebuild after the war. Having spent his entire life around the sport, Mr. Tintore knew that tennis could help.

Just two years later, and with no prior connections to the city, he personally delivered a large shipment of sports equipment to Sarajevo. Since that time, he's visited more than 20 times, each time bringing more gear, other influential tennis fans, and most importantly, hope to the city.

Tennis and the Titanic: Now Showing in the Museum

Like many of the R.M.S. Titanic's approximately 2,200 passengers, Americans Karl Howell Behr and Richard Norris Williams II climbed aboard the ill-fated ship in search of their dreams- Behr was chasing love, and Williams striving for an Ivy League education and a successful tennis career. When the grand, "unsinkable" ship struck an iceberg late on April 14, 1912, the two were among the small, fortunate group of just 700 or so survivors. Neither of the two took their good fortune for granted. They succeeded in their professional careers and also became two of the best tennis players in the history of the game, with Williams being inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1957 and Behr in 1969.

The personal stories and tennis careers of these two Hall of Famers are nothing short of fascinating. As the world commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic disaster, the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum has opened a special exhibit in their honor called "Tennis and the Titanic." The exhibit will be on display at the Hall of Fame for one year. Be sure to check out the video to the left for a peak, and feedback from their families.

Stephen Murphy & Frank Sedgman

Stephen Murphy with

Hall of Famer Frank Sedgman.

Having coached for decades and played since he was just a small child, Stephen Murphy of Toowoomba, Australia has been a tennis fan for as long as he can remember. Throughout his career, some have been fortunate to call him a coach, others a teammate, and at the Hall of Fame, we're proud to call him an ambassador and a member!

Growing up as a leading junior in Adelaide, South Australia, Stephen was coached by Peter Smith at Denman Tennis Club. Of course, years later, Smith taught the young Lleyton Hewitt at the same club, and today, Stephen counts Hewitt among his favorite players to watch.

In addition to playing and coaching, Stephen has had extensive involvement with tennis as a journalist. In 2002, he interviewed Pam Shriver for an article about her Hall of Fame induction to appear in Australian Tennis Magazine

"The interview was really what first introduced me to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and I quickly became a Hall of Fame member because of my deep appreciation of tennis history," said Stephen. "I've been so pleased to support an outstanding institution which honors the history and heritage of our great game."

Though he's never had the chance to visit (yet!), Stephen has taken an active role in supporting the Tennis Hall of Fame. As a volunteer, Stephen has personally distributed information about the Hall of Fame to clubs throughout Australia and he works hard to build awareness among the tennis community in Australia. Stephen is also a proud member of the Australian Tennis Museum and a curator of a regional tennis museum.

In addition to his interest in the history of the sport, Stephen is active on the ITF Seniors Circuit, he is a Tennis Australia Junior Development coach, specializing in the 5-10 age group, and he also officiates tournaments.
