Our mission is to end poverty and homelessness. We do this by mobilizing faith-based and community partners, activating individual and community assets and talents, and meeting immediate needs in our community.

Interview with Jessica Keizer, Faith in Youth AmeriCorps member

Tell me a little about you and how you came to be at the ROCK.
I actually started volunteering at the ROCK when I was a senior [in college]. All of them [the kids] grabbed my heart. When I heard about this AmeriCorps position opening up, I was excited to be there all the time. I am in my second year with AmeriCorps now, but I hope to be able to stay on at the ROCK.

Tell me a little about Good Sam and the impact the organization has on your program.
Good Sam really provides good training and resources. I often refer the families of kids to Good Sam for help with all kinds of things. We had training by the Disability Network on disabilities and diversity. It was really helpful to give perspective on what people think.

Can you tell me a story of someone you have impacted at the ROCK?

Well, there is this one girl. She's about 15 years old and she has been in and out of the Mission with her family so there's no stability for her. She really had a rebellious attitude and pushed people away because everyone leaves her. She wrote me a letter saying how much she trusts me. It says,

"Dear Jessica, You are the most wonderful person I know...I trust in you with all of my capabilities to trust...I just wanted to let you know I love you and appreciate everything you do for me. Love, Student."
