TIGER PRIDE
  Lebanon Athletics Monthly News
From the Athletic Director - December 2015
I want to begin by wishing all of you a safe and Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year!

As we start the 2016 year, a lot of excitement is in the air. Our Winter Sports Teams are off to a fantastic start and we have a lot to look forward too as we make our way through the rest of the season and work towards IHSAA Tournament play.

The Lady Tiger Sharks are working hard to defend their Sagamore Conference Title. They have a lot of young talent and are led by 3 seniors. The have faced some difficult competition but keep improving and at press time have a record of 4-3.

The Boys Swim and Dive Team is competing well despite not having a lot of numbers. Their record stands at 2-2. Coach Thatcher is very optimistic about the rest of the season and looking forward to Conference and Sectionals.

Congratulations to the Lady Tigers Varsity Basketball Team. The Lady Tigers captured the Tipton Tournament and they remain undefeated in Conference play. Coach DeVinney and the Lady Tigers are looking forward to participating in the Hall of Fame Classic, December 29th.

The Varsity Boys Basketball Team is working hard and has had some thrilling and outstanding games. They defeated Kokomo and Brownsburg two opponents they have struggled with in years past. Currently, they have a record of 4-1. The Tigers are looking forward to participating in the Richmond Tournament December 28-30th and playing against Brebeuf at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan 9th.

The Wrestling Team is having a strong season so far. They have wrestled in several tournaments and have victories over conference opponents Southmont and Danville. They are extremely excited about heading to the Connersville Spartan Classic Tournament on December 29th and 30th and then participating by invitation in the IHSWCA Team State Tournament
in Fort Wayne on January 2nd. Best of Luck to all the Tiger Wrestlers!

The Pep Band, under the direction of Mr. Alan Conrad, continues to sound great. Amanda Wines
has the Tigerettes shaking their poms, dancing, and waving their flags with pride. The Cheerleaders are doing a wonderful job leading the crowds and displaying a tremendous amount of school spirit! They work hard to create a positive atmosphere and contribute to the crowd excitement. Many thanks to the cheerleaders and their coaches, Lauren Greene and Jordan Hensell.

Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the Fall season and your continued support this winter. Fall Athlete Award winners are listed below. Remember the Winter Sports Award Night will take place March 16th.

I encourage everyone to attend a Winter sports event. Please make sure you are checking the website daily (www.lebanonathletics.com) for announcements. The winter weather is upon us and, as a result, we could have multiple cancellations and/or postponements.

Our student athletes and coaches work diligently to be successful in competition and in the classroom. Attending an event and displaying your Tiger Pride does help support our student athletes in their efforts to achieve success. The athletes and coaches appreciate the crowds at home and the advantage it creates. They would also love to see more Tiger fans travel on the road and attend away events. We all thank you very much for your support.

TIGER PRIDE!

Sincerely,

Phil Levine, CAA

TIGERS ATHLETICS IN THE COMMUNITY
Tigers Honor Craig Terrill!
By Rachel Terrill, Player Engagement Insider
In honor of Super Bowl 50 former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Craig Terrill returned to Lebanon, Indiana to present an NFL Golden Football to his alma mater. Lebanon High School welcomed Terrill, the school's first Super Bowl participant, at a special Friday evening presentation.

With the lights dimmed a highlight reel of Terrill's seven-year NFL career excited fans in the school's packed gymnasium. Terrill is one of five generations to attend LHS and is the school's only athlete to play in NFL. "I could not be prouder to have represented Lebanon High School in the NFL and to help our school land on the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll," he said.

Terrill encouraged current LHS students to set goals and work to achieve them. "I hope that this football might serve as a symbol and a reminder that is important to dream big and to work hard," he said.

The Seahawks drafted Terrill out of Purdue University in 2004 and he played for them until his retirement following the 2010 season. He was a key component in the team's four division championships, the 2005 NFC Championship game, and Super Bowl XL. Terrill amassed more than 100 career tackles and tied the all-time Seahawks record for most blocked field goals in a season and in a career.

Several former and current high school coaches joined Terrill on stage for the presentation. "The night before Super Bowl XL, I could hardly sleep," he said. "I was about to play in the biggest game of my life. As I sat in my hotel room, I thought about the amazing coaches from right here in Lebanon who helped me get there."

"This golden football is a symbol of what Lebanon High School has been, what it is today, and what it will be in the future. To the coaches and athletes who were around when I was a student and to those who followed and to those who are yet to come. I am so proud to be a part of this school's rich tradition -- and to present this golden football to LHS. Go Tigers!"

Upon receiving the NFL Golden Football, the high school had a surprise for Terrill. Former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck presented a video message congratulating him and LHS for the role they played in Terrill's career. As the video ended, Lebanon Tigers, old and new, chanted Terrill's name.

The school presented Terrill with a plaque and a display case with Terrill's jerseys, pictures from his NFL career, and the commemorative Super Bowl 50 golden football. The display will remain at the high school to remind students of what can be accomplished by working hard and making the right choices.

LHS Athletic Director, Phil Levine said, "We look at Craig Terrill as a wonderful role model not only for the LHS athletes but all students.  Having Craig directly involved with our school and students, and being able to display his achievements, will continue to have a positive impact on all of our students and ultimately provide them with the character development and skills they need to be successful in life."

Congratulations
Senior Madi Heffron: Indiana Volleyball All-Star

On Sunday November 22nd Madi had the opportunity to represent Lebanon by being selected to participate in the ICGSA Indiana Senior Volleyball Classic All Star game held at Lawrence North High School
. Madi is the first player from Lebanon to play in this prestigious event and was one of just four 3A players on the South Team. After dropping the first set to the North Team, Madi helped the South Team win set #2 25-19 and the final set 15-12 to capture the overall victory. Madi was a three year Varsity starter for Lebanon and was very instrumental in the Tigers winning the Sagamore Conference in 2014. She finished her Tiger career with a three year record of 66 wins, and 37 loses, 1,535 assists, 473 kills, 139 aces and 712 digs. Madi is currently undecided on college but she hopes to continue her volleyball playing days at the next level. To commemorate Madi's outstanding achievement, her picture and replica All-Star jersey will hang on the wall in a location outside the gym area. Once again, Lebanon Congratulates Madi on this outstanding honor and wishes her all the best with her future endeavors. Congratulations Madi!

Congratulations Luanna Hill
Lebanon Teacher to be
Inducted
Into Hall of Fame

By Will Willems, Sports Editor
There is a Lebanon connection to one of the newest women's inductees into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Luanna Faye Hill, who starred at Pike High School in the late 1970s, and currently teaches at Lebanon High School, is part of the nine-person induction class this spring. The formal induction will take place on April 30. "It was a quite a surprise," Hill said. "It means a lot. There has been a lot of talent that has come through the state it is amazing that they would recognize me. It is a great feeling."
Hill played three varsity seasons at Pike, leading the Red Devils to a 44-13 record. They won the Marion County Championship in 1976, '77 and 78', and won the Central Suburban Athletic Conference title in 1977. She was a three-time all-county and two-time all-conference selection. She became Pike's first Indiana All-Star in 1978 after averaging 19 points and 14 rebounds a game and setting Pike's record for career assists with 190. "I loved playing with all the girls at Pike and it was special to win the Marion County title three times," Hill said. "Being an All-Star in 1978 was another extreme surprise. It really wasn't a goal back then, and the IHSAA had just taken over governing women's basketball. It was a real surprise and something that I treasure."

She graduated from Ball State with a degree in Psychology and since has been a teacher and coach at Pike, Cardinal Ritter and Lebanon, where she is currently a teacher in the science department. While she no longer coaches, she said that coaching was something she enjoyed doing. It was great to show them little pointers that I had picked up," Hill said. Hill says that she still occasionally gets to games now and enjoys watching the Lebanon girls compete in the games she gets to go to.

She said if she had advice for young players growing up, it would be put all your effort into something you want. "My advice would be to work hard at whatever you chose to do and enjoy it," Hill said.

LHS ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT
A Message About Playing Time

As a parent we understand that you may not always see your student athletes abilities objectively. And that is okay, because it is important for parents to believe their student athlete is special or unique. However, we strongly request that before you reach out to that coach to voice your concerns, you consider the following process the LHS coaches follow for making routine playing time decisions.

As our LHS athletic programs continue to grow and become more successful, the competition for playing time increases between each athlete on a team. Competition within a program truly helps each individual to work his or her hardest to improve. This, in turn, helps the entire program reach the next level of success.

Our coaches will play the student athletes who work the hardest, display the best attitude and sportsmanship, and display the best talent and skills for their position to help the team win. It doesn't matter if this individual is a freshman or a senior. It does not matter if this student athlete is approaching or going to achieve an individual goal, accomplishment or record. The student athlete who, in the coach's mind through numerous hours of observation, film review and practices, displays the attributes that they are looking for and they believe will help the team be successful will receive playing time. Coaches don't recognize entitlement and selfishness by the student athlete or parent when determining playing time.

With competition increasing and our programs growing in their successes, the easiest way for student athletes to earn playing time and keep up with the competition is by dedicating and making a commitment to both themselves and their teammates to do whatever it takes, whatever their coaches ask, and to be the best that they can be.

Remember our coaches want to win and be successful, but they also realize that the most important thing about participating in sports at the high school level (Education based athletics) is to teach our student athletes work ethic, time management skills, self -confidence, commitment, dedication, leadership skills, how to deal with success and failure, and how to correct mistakes. The coaches job is for the student athlete to keep all of these skills in perspective as they participate in sports, which will help benefit them for the rest of their lives with their families, school work and future endeavors.
