The Excellence of Wisdom

Receive my instruction, and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold;
For wisdom is better than rubies,
And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
"I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
And find out knowledge and discretion.
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.
Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, I have strength.
By me kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
By me princes rule, and nobles,
All the judges of the earth.
I love those who love me,
And those who seek me diligently will find me.
Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring riches and righteousness.
My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold,
And my revenue than choice silver.

Proverbs 8:10-19

Pastor's Post
It has been almost 20 years since I was last in Australia.  I served as the youth pastor of the Wantirna SDA Church in 1997-1998.  It was a wonderful experience.  It was my first time away from home (not including school), and I was single and eager to learn.  I remember my flight out of LAX, watching the city lights fade away.  I wondered what my Australia adventure was going to be like.

Now, almost 20 years later, I'm packing for a return trip.  A lot has changed.  I have my own home now, I'm married, and blessed with a son.  I've learned a lot since 1997.  One of the things I've learned is that we always have more to learn.  I look back on my Australian Adventure with many fond memories.

As I pack, I'm looking forward to making new memories.  Meeting old friends; introducing my family to people and places that were special to me.

When you pack for a long trip, what do you take?  What are the essential items that you must have?  We are asking that question because we've already packed and our suitcases are over the weight limit.  That means something has to come out.  What will it be?  What did we think we "had to have" that we can pull out and do without?

When I think of airplane trips, flying in the sky, and traveling, my thoughts frequently turn toward heaven.  What an amazing trip that will be!

What kind of things do you think we can pack for that trip?  What things do we feel are essential to our lives that we will take with us?  The truth is there isn't very much that we will be taking with us.  My suitcase is mostly full of clothes and my carry-on is full of electronics.  I don't imagine needing either on the way to heaven.

We do take our character to heaven.  Thankfully, it's our God-perfected character.  We will also have the opportunity to take loved ones to heaven.

It challenges me to make sure I'm more focused on who I am in God, and the spiritual well-being of my family, than the items that I can put into a suitcase.  Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for the things in my suitcase, but in heaven my earthly possessions will be forgotten.

I look forward to taking my family on this trip, but I look forward, even more, to taking them to heaven with me!
