Seven Things to Do After You Look at Pornography
| |
A lot of Christian advice about porn addicts is unhelpful-meaning, it doesn't contribute to real progress in repentance, healing, restoration and recovery. Most of all, it fails to address the issues that underlie porn use. Often, Christian advice either has its head in the clouds of theology and biblical references, or is a list of superficial how-tos, and gets knocked beneath the sand of real life-of failure, and the struggle to hope. How is the gospel relevant to failing and trying again? And failing and trying again? And failing and trying again?

Pastor's Post
| |
For the past week I have been at Andrews University working on my Doctor of Ministry Degree. The particular class I am taking is "Spiritual and Theological Foundations of Ministry." It has been an exciting journey. My prayer life and devotional time have already been greatly blessed.
But, before I get into this, I'd like to tell you about my airplane ride into Chicago. The flight attendants checked the cabin in preparation for landing. They picked up our trash and asked us to place our tray tables in the full, upright, and locked position. I complied and continued to casually read my book. As usually happens when we get close to the runway, I turned my head and briefly glanced out the window. Immediately I did a double take. I've flown enough to know something wasn't right. We were coming in waaaaaay toooooo fast. Immediately, I put my book down (as if that was going to help) and grabbed my seat. Those around me realized we were coming in really fast, as well. Breathlessly, the moment came when we touched down. It was a fairly smooth landing, but quickly we were all jerked forward and every available method in the plane was used to slow us down and ultimately stop us. When the plane finally came to a stop, the pilot came over the intercom and broke the tension by saying, "at least the brakes worked." Nervous laughter erupted in the cabin as we acknowledged the pilots humor and our thankfulness to be alive.
Like the landing of this plane, life seems to go by quickly. All too quickly. One of the emphases of the class I am taking is "slowing down." We have been spending time "slowing down" and individually reading and contemplating scripture. We've spent time in quiet prayer, journaling our conversations with God. These haven't been earth shattering concepts, but it has been a blessing to be "forced" to slow down and spend deep, meaningful time with God. It has shown me how busy my life is, and I'm sure you're life is equally as busy. What would tomorrow be like if you took time tonight to plan some special time with God? Maybe go to bed a little early, then, when you wake up, you'll be fresher as you open your Bible and your heart to God. We learn to love people by spending time with them. We learn to love God by spending time with Him.
I look forward to returning home to be with you, my church family, soon.
God bless each of you,
Pastor Adam Case
