Monkey at the People Cage
My wife's Grandmother wrote a book she entitled "Monkey At The People Cage."The idea being, when you go to the zoo and look at the animals, are you looking at them or are they looking at you?
About a year ago, on a Sabbath afternoon, we took Joshua to the zoo in Madison Wisconsin. As we walked past the monkey cage we stopped and watched with interest as two monkeys were right up by the glass. They had found a small piece of metal and were using it as a tool. They were digging at the seal between the two pieces of large glass that were holding them captive. They could see out, but they couldn't get out. They would dig, then pull, then rip, and out would come a piece of the sealing material. Systematically they were digging themselves free. They were seeking to escape, all the while hundreds of humans stood there and watched.
Did they care? Were they concerned? Apparently not. Did they have a chance of getting out of their cage? Not likely.
The Bible tells us that we, too, are being watched. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
I believe this great cloud of witnesses refers to the heavenly beings who are observing what is happening here on planet earth. What do they see? Do they see us trying to escape on our own? Or do they see us looking to Jesus? I pray they see us looking to Jesus.
