Focus on the Family Diabetes Fun Walk: October 1st x
The 1st Annual Focus on the Family Diabetes Fun Walk will be held at Trammell Crow Park on Saturday, October 1st. See Flyer.
Organized by the Georgia Diabetes Coalition (GDC) and DCAC, the Diabetes Fun Walk presents an opportunity for people living with diabetes, their family members and co-workers; health advocates and health care providers; as well as local community groups and businesses to come together to be informed, get support, and stay connected.
The funds raised through the Diabetes Fun Walk will be used to support the educational and outreach programs of the Diabetes Community Action Coalition, the local Chapter of GDC in Metro Atlanta.
There are many ways in which you can help to make the Diabetes Fun Walk a success:
- Be a Team Captain or a member on someone else's Team.
- Conduct a letter writing campaign to raise $100 and recruit 10 Team members.
- Be a volunteer at the Fun Walk.
- Invite your church's health ministry to form a Team.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses. For more information, contact the Fun Walk Coordinator, Noni Walker at (770) 842-4558 or by email to nwalker@GDCToday.org.

Protection from Mosquito Bites
While there have been reports of Zika virus transmission by mosquitos in one neighborhood in Miami, no local transmission has been reported in Georgia. It is important to be mindful, however, that the West Nile virus has been transmitted by the bite from infected mosquitos.
According to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, the peak season for West Nile virus transmission in Georgia is August 15th to September 15th.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has outlined steps to take to prevent mosquito bites. Included in these steps is the recommendation to use insect repellent. For a comparison of the effectiveness of different mosquito repellents, read the article from Consumer Reports here.
