Fresh Produce from Mobile Farmers Markets
 x
Within Metro Atlanta, there is a concern about the prevalence of neighborhoods where food insecurity exists. This summer, the UGA Cooperative Extension Service has implemented programs to address food insecurity by bringing fresh produce to residents in these areas.

In DeKalb County:  Affordable, regionally grown fruits and vegetables are available through the DeKalb Mobile Farmers Market. The market accepts EBT cards, credit cards, checks, and cash. See schedule.

In Fulton County, community members who register for the cooking demonstration and nutrition class will receive free fresh vegetables. See Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market schedule.

To locate farmers markets and community gardens throughout the state, see the Georgia Organics Good Food Guide.

Eating more fruits and vegetables can lower the risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.  To learn more, see the handout, Healthy Eating, from the National Diabetes Prevention Program.

DCAC on the Zika Virus: What You Should Know

There have been no reports of mosquitos carrying the Zika virus in the United States. Americans have become infected, though, while travelling in areas where the Zika virus has been reported. See reports of Zika virus in the U.S. States and Territories and reports of active Zika virus transmission in the world.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created  easy-to-read materials in multiple languages about Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases.  See CDC's Fact Sheets and Posters

For women or are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, it is important to learn more and take steps to prevent Zika infection.  See:  Zika Prevention Kit for Pregnant Women.

For more in-depth and up-to-date information, see
CDC: Key Messages - Zika Virus Disease.

Why does DCAC want to raise awareness about Zika virus disease?   Because so much is not known.

What is known:  People living with poorly controlled diabetes (A1c of 9 percent or higher), especially older adults, are at higher risk for developing complications during periods of illness or infection.

What is not known
:  If people living with diabetes, whether well managed or poorly managed, are at greater risk of developing more serious conditions related to Zika virus disease.
