Update: National Guidelines for Diabetes Screening
The National Guidelines for diabetes screening were recently updated to include overweight or obese adults ages 40 to 70 years old. The Guidelines instruct health care providers to consider screening adults at a younger age who have any of several diabetes risk factors including those with a family history of diabetes, a history of Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy, or being a member of a high-risk racial/ethnic group (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asia American, Native American). The Diabetes Screening blood test is covered by health insurance as a free preventive service.

The Scout DS® Diabetes Screen is a new screening tool developed by Miraculins, a Canadian company, which uses visible light rather than a blood sample to detect and measure biomarkers present in the skin associated with Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.
x The manufacturer is conducting a pilot project to determine how effective the Scout DS® Diabetes Screen would be when used in a kiosk in the retail pharmacy setting.
