DCAC Invited to Speak at JDRF Symposium
DCAC Co-Chair Vicki Karnes shared tips on managing the high cost of diabetes both with and without health insurance at TypeOne Nation, an annual educational symposium organized by the Georgia Chapter of JDRF, on Feb. 21st.
It is widely known that JDRF is a leader in research to prevent and cure Type 1 Diabetes, but did you know that JDRF, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, has expanded to provide support to individuals and families of all ages affected by Type 1 Diabetes?
Support groups meet both online and in person throughout Georgia and the U.S. To learn more, see Find Support.

February is American Heart Month
Women living with diabetes are at a higher risk for a heart attack. In the U.S., a woman suffers a heart attack every 90 seconds, yet only half of women surveyed indicated they would call 9-1-1, if they thought they were having a heart attack. Few were aware of the most common heart attack symptoms.
 | One of the ways that a heart attack feels like to a woman. |
|
Make the Call. Don't Miss a Beat. is a national campaign that aims to educate, engage, and empower women and their families to learn the seven most common symptoms of a heart attack and encourage them to call 9-1-1 as soon as those symptoms arise.
Free copies of the flyer depicting the most common symptoms of a heart attack in women can be ordered by calling 1-800-994-9662.

Update: Health Insurance Marketplace
If you missed the February 15th deadline to enroll, you are no longer able to buy health insurance with Minimum Essential Coverage for 2015. This is true of health plans sold both inside and outside the Marketplace.
However, a one-time Special Enrollment Period will be available on HealthCare.gov from March 15th to April 30th for those who did not have health insurance in 2014. Read more.
Note: A Special Enrollment Period is available at any time during the year for those who experience a qualifying life event.

Quality Improvement for Medicare Beneficiaries
DCAC along with numerous other health care organizations in Fulton and DeKalb counties have committed to begin working together as part of the new Atlanta Metro Community Health Care Connections (CHCC) group. Those who join the group must be interested in collaborating with other organizations through mission-healthy conversations to improve the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries, however all are welcome to attend meetings.
The second meeting of the Atlanta Metro CHCC group will be held on Tuesday, March 10th from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Steiner Building on the Grady campus on Jessie Hill Jr. Drive. Contact Jennifer Hodge, Alliant GMCF Coordination of Care Task Lead, at 678-527-3614 or by e-mail to Jennifer.Hodge@alliantquality.org for more information.
CHCC groups are chartered and meet throughout Georgia. To join a CHCC group near you, see Communities.

Advocacy Update:
Increasing Access to Healthcare
Fulton County employees now have access to Tobacco Cessation Treatments (TCTs) as a free preventive service under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) thanks to the combined efforts of DCAC, the Smoke-Free Coalition of Fulton County, the Fulton County Division of Health Promotion, and the Fulton County Employee Wellness Committee.
DCAC and the Georgia Diabetes Coalition have joined state-wide partners to make coverage of TCTs available to all Georgians who purchased health insurance on the Marketplace. Stay tuned as our advocacy campaign moves to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance in Georgia.
