Diabetes and the Flu

Getting the flu is no fun, especially for people with Diabetes.
If you or a loved one are living with Diabetes and get the flu, there are important things to know.  Be prepared. Talk with your doctor about a "Sick-Day Plan."   Read more.

From the CDC:
What you can do to Fight the Flu:
1. Take time to get a flu vaccine
2. Take everyday preventive action to stop the spread of germs
3. Take flu anti-viral drugs (Tamiflu® or Relenza are usually prescribed by doctors.)

People living with diabetes who get the flu should call their doctor immediately.  The anti-viral drugs work best when started within 2 days of getting sick. See:  Who should take flu antiviral drugs?

Need Health Insurance?

                   Sign up before February 15th!

Financial help to buy health insurance is available through the Health Insurance Marketplace.  The deadline to apply for 2015 is coming soon.  Most people must sign up by February 15th or wait until January of 2016 to get help paying for health insurance.

Get your questions answered by calling 1-800-318-2596 (24/7) or sit down and talk with a trained Marketplace Navigator.  Find free local help by using the Get Covered Connector or by calling Connecting Georgians to Coverage at 1-855-899-6092.

Word of caution:  Many insurance agents are qualified to sign up  individuals and families for Marketplace health plans, but they aren't required to offer unbiased help or use the Marketplace website. Help to pay for insurance is only available through the Marketplace website at www.HealthCare.gov.

Affordable Care Act:  Free Preventive Services

Some people living with Diabetes smoke and/or use other tobacco products. Smoking raises the risk for diabetes complications (blindness, kidney failure, and leg amputations). Additionally, second-hand smoke increases the risk of other members of the household for developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Smoking cessation treatments are now included as a free preventive service in Health Plans sold since March of 2010.  Although the State Health Benefit Plan in Georgia has adopted the policy, it appears that other health insurance companies in Georgia have not yet updated their list to include these drugs and over-the-counter medications.

If you or a loved one is trying to quit smoking, talk to your doctor and insurance company about free help to quit.  Help is available through the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line 24/7 at 1-877-270-STOP.
