DCAC Expands Service Area
The Diabetes Community Action Coalition has expanded its service area to include DeKalb County in order to more fully support those families who receive services through the Grady Health System.
In response to Grady's 2013 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), Grady Healthy System developed a plan called the Community Benefit Program which identified and prioritized 10 health needs with diabetes being the first priority.

DCAC Quarterly Meeting
Please join us for DCAC's quarterly meeting on Tuesday, October 28th. A guest speaker from Alliant GMCF will provide an update on the Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) initiative. EDC is afree group diabetes education program designed for senior adults beginning in 2015. x Meeting location:

Update: Health Insurance Marketplace
DCAC and Cutting Edge Health Options are collaborating again this year to provide education and enrollment assistance in the Health Insurance Marketplace.
Health advocates and/or community groups interested in promoting health insurance options available through the Marketplace can become a Champion for Coverage.
Those individuals interested in providing enrollment assistance in the Marketplace are required to obtain a Georgia "Navigator" license and work under the supervision of a federally recognized program. To learn more, see: Marketplace Training Course.
Open Enrollment for health insurance through the Marketplace begins on Nov. 15th and extends through Feb. 15, 2015. Coverage begins as early as Jan. 1, 2015.

Greater Health Literacy Awareness Needed
October is Health Literacy Awareness Month. Although Health Literacy is an underlying cause of health disparities, it affects people of all ages, races, income, and education levels. Health literacy (HL) is the extent to which individuals have the ability to make sound health decisions in the course of everyday living - in the home, community, work place, healthcare environment, market place, etc.
DCAC Co-Chair, Glenda Knight, PhD, MPH, CHES, has studied and investigated health literacy issues extensively.

The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) has developed a Toolkit Working Together to Manage Diabetes which includes a revised Guide designed for health educators as well as Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dentistry (PPOD) providers. See: PPOD Toolkit.
