CDC Releases National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2012

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014. The numbers are alarming.  More than 29 million people in the United States have diabetes, up from the previous estimate of 25.8 million in 2010.

Another 86 million adults, more than one in three U.S. adults, have prediabetes.  The concern here is that only 1 in 10 adults are aware that they have the condition.  Without weight loss and moderate physical activity, 15% to 30% of people with prediabetes will develop Type 2 Diabetes within five years.

The report shows that complications from uncontrolled diabetes are on the rise.  For example, the number of lower-limb amputations in people living with diabetes rose to 73,000 in 2010, up from 65,700 in 2006.  The significant racial and ethnic disparities related to diabetes are also highlighted in the report.
Read the CDC report here.
