District Administrator's Message

I wanted to share this edition of the eNews a day or two early to make sure you are aware of an awesome event on Sunday, May 1. Mark your calendars...you won't want to miss it!

Feather Fest is an annual event that celebrates the return of migratory birds to their northern nesting grounds. It is hosted by the City of New London with help from Mosquito Hill Nature Center staff and volunteers, as well as students from the School District of New London.

Feather Fest will be held from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm on May 1 at Hatten Park, and activities are available for the whole family. Students will be helping with activities and crafts tailored toward younger birders. The entire schedule of events can be viewed on the City's Parks and Recreation Department's Events page at www.newlondonwi.org.

Environmental Science teacher, John Ruckdashel, represents the School District of New London on the 'Bird City Committee' and has recently been awarded a grant to offset the cost of developing a new prairie plot at New London High School.

This grant opportunity will allow students to get a hands-on experience this spring and fall as they install a new landscaped bed which will include a variety of native plants that offer quality habitat to a variety of wildlife. We are fortunate to have Steve Petznick from the Mosquito Hill Nature Center assist in the project. Students in Mr. Ruckdashel's classes will play a major role in the design of the bed, plant selection, removal of the turf grass, and installation of the new plants.

Thank you to all who do so much for our schools and community! Enjoy your time at Feather Fest on Sunday.

Go Bulldogs!
