2016 Power of the Purse
The 10th Annual Power of the Purse is less than two weeks away!

The committee and staff have been hard at work finalizing details for the big event! Power of the Purse is April 22nd at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. Doors will open at 10:30 AM for the luncheon and 5:00 PM for dinner. The dinner will conclude with the Power Purse drawing at 8:30 PM (need not be present to win).

This year our keynote speaker, Carrie Van Daele, president and CEO of Van Daele & Associates, Inc., will present "The Power of the Purse for the 21st Century Lady." Van Daele believes, "Your purse commands your influence, channels your supremacy, and gives you the edge of governing your independence. It is your signature statement, ladies. Find out what your signature statement is - you deserve it." To learn more about Carrie Van Daele, visit www.leant3.com.

You may still purchase dinner tickets at the United Way office (208 S. Jackson St. Auburn) with cash or check only.  Tickets are $50.

Volunteer Spotlight: Michelle Phillips
Like many women in DeKalb County, Michelle Phillips has been attending the Power of the Purse for many years. Michelle absolutely loves this annual United Way fundraising event because of its fun energy and empowerment - not to mention the excitement of potentially winning a fabulous purse while supporting a wonderful cause that makes such a difference in DeKalb County.

Six years ago she was talking with Julie Hill-Lauer, previous director of the United Way of DeKalb County. Michelle was sharing how much she loves the Power of the Purse event and looks forward to it every year. During this time, Michelle was asked to join the Power of the Purse committee. Michelle did not hesitate; immediately accepting the invitation - the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Bringing her great enthusiasm and creativity, Michelle has served on the Power the Purse Committee for five years - doing everything from selecting linens to soliciting sponsors. Now, six years later we are pleased to announce that our new Power of the Purse Committee Chairperson is none other than Michelle Phillips.

Michelle is quick to deflect any personal acknowledgement to her hard-working committee members.  Including Committee Member Lili Hand. Anyone who has met Lili, knows she has a contagious laugh and always has a positive word for others. "Lili is an amazing woman who makes such a difference for others. I love surrounding myself with people who care about our community," said Michelle.

Michelle encourages everyone to consider volunteering with the United Way of DeKalb county, and says, "Be prepared to give your time, talents and treasures."

Meet Uniteus the Bison!
Last week the United Way of DeKalb County (UWDC) held a bison naming contest on social media, at the Atrium MarketPlace, and at the UWDC office.  Over 40 people responded with names they found fitting for the DeKalb County Bison on social media!

UWDC had hopes of finding a name that represented all of DeKalb County! Social media comments included names such as founders of DeKalb County, automobile designers of some of Auburn's infamous cars, and some names that were just really fun! The UWDC's events and marketing committee went through the list of 51 names and narrowed it down to two choices. The top two names included "United the Bison" and "Brutus". The committee members liked both names so well that they decided to create the fun name Uniteus!

The UWDC aims to unite all members of the community in order to maximize resources and improve lives. "Unite us" will help UWDC bring the community together throughout the year by featuring him at community events and festivals!

Congratulations to Michelle Atz & Heather Waldon for being the winners of the UW prize bag!

If you spot Uniteus out in the community be sure to capture a photo with him and share it on social media using these hashtags:
