Volunteer Spotlight: John Chalmers
2016 Barbara S. Oren Award Recipient
John Chalmers was nominated for the 2016 Barbara S. Oren award for his many contributions not only to United Way but for his contributions to DeKalb County as a whole.

John Chalmers has been involved with the United Way on many levels including serving two consecutive three year terms on the board of directors. John also served on the United Way campaign and events and marketing committees and has volunteered at the annual Power of the Purse event.  He has called, visited and championed the United Way at several county industries and businesses to encourage campaigns and sponsorships. John has also been instrumental in making our kick-off celebration at the DeKalb Outdoor Theater successful by securing bands and other entertainment and negotiating costs. John is a discerning individual who offers wise counsel at meetings. He quietly and humbly serves the United Way and the community at-large while shunning the spotlight he deserves. He recently stepped back from the UW board, but we know he would be here in a heartbeat if called upon for help.  He is also an active member of the Auburn Community Band and its various musical offshoots and the DeKalb County Airport board.

On behalf of the United Way of DeKalb County staff and Board of Directors, Congratulations John and thank you for all the hard work you have contributed to United Way and your community!

2016 Women's Leadership Annual Meeting:
Floral Design and Wine
United Way of DeKalb County invites all ladies to the Women's Leadership Council (WLC) Annual Membership Meeting on Monday, March 14th, 2016.  The meeting will take place from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bridgewater Country Club (1818 Morning Star Road, Auburn, IN 46706). Light hors d'oeuvres will be served, and Peggy Souder will guide us in creating a simple floral arrangement.  The evening will include 2015 WLC highlights, 2016 WLC plans, and a Let's Talk Early Learning Initiative update for DeKalb County.

Exciting plans are underway for 2016 and we need YOU to share your vision, passion, and expertise to help us make positive changes in our community. Some ideas that the WLC leadership team have been considering include story times with children, a dining etiquette event for young women, a disability awareness experience, a genealogy event, and participation in an "Essence of Woman" art exhibit.  In addition to these opportunities, we will partner with Serenity House to mentor women in recovery, and we will continue to develop and support efforts that focus on the importance of early learning.

Please feel free to bring a friend or colleague to the Membership Meeting. If you bring a guest to the March 14th event, both your name and your guest's name will be entered in a drawing to win two 2016 Power of the Purse tickets!

Please RSVP by March 9th to [email protected].
