Esta Semana

 Greetings!

The holidays are a busy time for all.  We know that your time is important during this holiday season, so we seek to provide you only events that will serve the greatest value to your business.  Last week was an extremely busy week for the SHCC Staff and members. We hosted The Mayors Latino Leaders Breakfast Reception with Mayor Johnson and Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio where they highlighted best practices bringing education and business together in our community. Two of the presenting sponsors, Wal-Mart and PG&E, gave examples of how their companies are partnering with education through City Year and The New Energy Academy (NEA). Mayor Johnson introduced Mayor Castro by remembering the following quote from his Democratic Convention keynote address,

"The American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay. Our families don't always cross the finish line in the span of one generation. But each generation passes on to the next the fruits of their labor. My grandmother never owned a house. She cleaned other people's houses so she could afford to rent her own. But she saw her daughter become the first in her family to graduate from college. And my mother fought hard for civil rights so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone."

It was an outstanding  breakfast with two dynamic mayors sharing their vision for bringing our communities together in a relay, each one creating the path for our next generation of leadership. It was a dynamic sight to see the leaders in our community come together for a motivating and impactful occasion.

Thanks to all that attended the Alliance Holiday Mixer last Thursday at District 30, and provided gifts for children in need. We were able to provide gifts to the Wellspring Women's Center through your generous donations. Wellspring serves over 200 at-risk women and children a day with a warm breakfast, and we are humbled to help to those in the community that could use some holiday cheer. We hope that many of you were gifted with new contacts at the mixer to increase your business in the new year.

We ended the week with an Elected Official Roundtable with Assemblymember Roger Dickinson.  He discussed his small business initiative with SHCC members, and what he is doing to address the challenges that small businesses are facing in our state. We appreciate everyone spending their valuable time with us, and hope that you see the benefit in your membership by the programs offered you throughout the year.

If you haven't attended a Member Orientation recently come out this Thursday at 1:00 to get an overview of the many programs and services the chamber provides you through your membership.

Make it a great week!
