and Public Affairs!

 

The Office of the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs continues to reach out to critical audiences around the world through our Embassies and through the State Department in Washington.  During this time of transition, this newsletter will showcase our global outreach efforts, keep you informed about people-to-people initiatives and introduce you to new members of our 'R' family as they arrive.  

 

Please enjoy the following highlights, this week, as we focus on the next generation of leaders throughout the world including: President Obama's launch of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), an entrepreneur webchat involving 30 countries and 250 students, Iraqi filmmakers participating in a UCLA film mentoring program, 60 Tunisian Thomas Jefferson Scholars set off for study in the United States, an English Access Microscholarship Program involving 50 Pakistani students, and the launch of the FIRST LEGO league in Mexico City promoting Science Technology and Math education for young adults.

ECA International Visitor Leadership Program

ECA 7-19-13 Am Corners

(IVLP) Trains American Corners Staff from Around the World:
American Corners coordinators-most visiting the United States for the first time-are participating in a three-week IVLP to collaborate and better understand public diplomacy and American culture.  The American Spaces Field Support Team organized sessions to help the coordinators create dynamic American Spaces Core Programs back home.

 

ECA Inaugurates Fulbright-Fogarty Scholars Program in Health Two Fulbright-Fogarty Scholars attended a July 8 - 12 orientation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty Global Health Fellows Program.  One Fellow will head to Peru and the other to Kenya to teach and conduct research in public health.  The Fulbright-Fogarty Scholars Program is supported by the Fogarty International Center at NIH.

 

ECA 7-19-13 TU Basketball Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Sports Visitors Promote Disability Rights: Highlighting the Department's commitment to diversity and inclusion of people from traditionally underrepresented groups, ECA recently wrapped up a Sports Visitors wheelchair basketball exchange program for a mixed-gender delegation of four coaches and eight athletes from Turkey.  A program highlight was participation in the State Department's Independence Day celebration, where athletes and coaches were moved by the red carpet treatment they received.

Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (EUR)

 

Engaging Spanish Opinion makers on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP):  Public Affairs Madrid hosted a video conference for Spanish think tank analysts, academics and business association representatives with Daniel Hamilton, Director Center for Transatlantic Relations at SAIS-Johns Hopkins University.  The objective of the program was to explain and promote Spanish support of TTIP.  Hamilton's participation in this video conference brought useful new perspectives on the Partnership, supporting the Mission�s goal of advocating for Spain�s commitment on this important issue. Hamilton�s remarks put the U.S.-Spain/Europe relationship into a global context, emphasizing the importance of Spain as a partner on issues like trade & goods, services, investment and regulatory issues and the impact that the TTIP will have on Spain's economic situation.  PA Madrid organized the program in collaboration with the Embassy�s Economic Section and the U.S. Foreign Agricultural

EUR 7-19-13 Spanish Opinion Service.  Mr. Hamilton's presentation was the fourth in a Post-created DVC series called "Encuentros con Washington" (Meetings with Washington) which brings together high-level Spanish policy makers and opinion-shapers with U.S. experts to engage in discussions that highlight the importance of the U.S.-EU partnership writ large.

Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP)

 

IIP 7-19-13 YALI IIP Spotlights Obama's Commitment to Next Generation of African Leaders: In coordination with the White House and the Department's Bureau of African Affairs (AF), IIP launched the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) website for President Obama's June 29 town hall in South Africa where he announced the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.  All 50 posts in Africa live-streamed the announcement and IIP amplified the launch through Facebook posts that reached over 110,000 people and tweets that reached an estimated 330,223 accounts. 

 

Entrepreneurship Webchat Involves Multiple IIP 7-19-13 Entrepeneurs Posts, 30 Countries:  More than 250 students, multiple posts,entrepreneurs and small business owners from all six regions participated in a June 27 webchat that provided tips for using social media tools to reach markets and grow a business's customer base.  Zeenat Rahman, Special Adviser on Global Youth Issues, moderated the discussion with U.S. Speaker Emily Wilson, Director of Ad Management for the marketing company SocialCode

Ambassador Walles Meets with Tunisian Thomas Jefferson Scholars

About 60 participants in the Thomas Jefferson Community College Scholarship and Thomas Jefferson Undergraduate Scholarship Programs attended a pre-departure orientation in Tunis on July 6 and 7.  These programs are intended to build the workforce capacity of a diverse group of youth leaders from underserved populations across Tunisia.  They provide participants with a deeper understanding of American culture and globally applicable skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development upon return to Tunisia.

 

Iraqi Filmmakers Enroll at UCLA as part of film mentoring program: A small delegation of young Iraqi filmmakers arrived in Los Angeles this week for a 10-day mentoring program at the UCLA School of Cinema.  The program aims at developing the film industry in Iraq by engaging young Iraqis who are excited to get extra training knowledge to reflect on the issues most essential in the Iraqi society. The visit is part of a yearlong NEA 7-19-13 Iraqi - UCLA program funded by U.S. Embassy Baghdad and organized by the Humpty Dumpty Institute and the Iraqi Independent Film Center.  As part of the program, film mentors from UCLA will come to Baghdad later in the year to work with the group on post-production of short film projects created as part of the project.  

 

Social and Business Innovations Emerge from Women's Leadership Workshops: With the goal of creating a network that empowers women activists in 4 of Israel's largest cities, Public Diplomacy (PD) Tel Aviv organized the Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO) Leadership workshop.  The workshop provided the participants with leadership skills and managerial tools to help them take social, economic, or political action and fight traditional constructs of gender in Israel.  The workshop closed with presentations by participants on innovative business and social strategies for activism.  

Bureau of Public Affairs (PA)

 

Fruits of TV Co-op Program Gain Exposure and Acclaim: Videos coming out of the television co-operative (TV Co-op) program, which brings foreign television producers and crews to the United States to film original documentaries and news features for broadcast on their home outlets, have gained wide exposure.  A piece on anti-gang efforts produced by Salvadorian participants recently aired on El Salvador's most widely watched morning and evening newscasts, with an estimated 1.5 million viewers.  A Russian documentary on waste management was screened at the Vladivostok International Film Festival, where it won first place in the "ecology" category. The documentary is scheduled to air on Russian television stations this month, and is expected to be aired repeatedly over the coming years.  Mexican participants' piece on university students in the U.S. premiered at a packed movie theater and was subsequently screened at a cultural center. The nearly one-hour documentary also aired on regional television stations, reaching an estimated 100,000 viewers. The finished documentary includes prominent Department of State mentions. 

 

PA 7-19-13 Shaw LiveAtState Administrator Shah Conducts Briefing on LiveAtState IME facilitated a LiveAtState with USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah, who discussed the President's recent trip to Africa and the various USAID development initiatives focused on Africa. The virtual press briefing lasted 45 minutes and Administrator Shah taking 20 questions. The LiveAtState had nearly 35 journalists and 7 African missions hosted watch parties.

English Access Groups Thrive in U.S.:  
On July 2, SCA 7-19-13 Pakistani Access

fifty Pakistani students and teachers returned home after a three-week cultural exchange program in the United States designed for participants of the

English Access Microscholarship Program, which targets disadvantaged youth.  The group honed English communication and pedagogical teaching skills by participating in activities related to leadership development, multicultural and interfaith dialogue, and environmental issues. Students said the exchange was "awesome" because "it taught us about being leaders," while teachers liked that it combined cultural diversity, leadership training and self-expression. English Access is a part of U.S. education initiatives in Pakistan and globally reaches 95,000 students in more than 85 countries. 

 

SCA 7-19-13 Sri Lanka Solar Bringing Light to Rural Communities: Empower Lanka, an Embassy-fundedyouth group dedicated to bringing solar energy to underserved communities, recently installed solar power systems in two Tamil and two Sinhala villages. The 55 families served by these systems now have direct access to electricity, which helps students complete schoolwork at night. Each house received either locally-made, environmentally friendly LED light bulbs or rechargeable LED lamps.

Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs (WHA)

 

Launch of FIRST LEGO:  U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Anthony Wayne joined Mexican officials for the launch of the FIRST LEGO League Innovation Ambassadors Event at the Benjamin Franklin Library in Mexico City.  FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds designed to get children excited about science and technology and teach them valuable employment and life skills. The Innovation Ambassadors Program is a collaboration between the State Department's Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement and the League, to encourage youth to be innovators, to pursue Science, WHA 7-19-13 First LEGO Technology, and Math (STEM) education, and to respect intellectual property as a product of innovation.  Seven teams and some 50 children participated in the event, showcasing their robotic projects.
