A Snapshot of
Public Diplomacy in Action
Tara D. Sonenshine, Under Secretary of State for
Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs

Greetings!

I am always delighted to see how robustly we are reaching out to young people - not only through our many programs and dedicated officers in missions, but also through our dedicated cultural ambassadors - people like singer Shantelle Williams engaging students in the Comoros; or Kevin Olusola, showing his cello beat-box technique to Japanese youth and talking about cultural diversity.  It's even more uplifting to see how many people are responding. Olusola's performance attracted 16,500 viewers and over 3000 comments on Japan's leading Internet video sites.  In Pakistan, the number of people commenting, liking, and sharing content on the embassy's site has become the highest of any U.S. embassy or consulate around the world.  And in its first year, IIP's Spanish language Facebook page Iniciativa Emprende has built a fan base of over 160,000.

Additionally, with Internet use growing in Iran, we are reaching more Iranian people, through VOA TV's new Persian streaming service on Livestation - which makes us one of the most popular international broadcasters in the country.

     Read more below!

Sincerely,

Tara D. Sonenshine

Public Diplomacy Programs
Programs by Area for the Week of July 2, 2012:
Long Term Project - Embassy Islamabad

Over the past six months, Embassy Islamabad's social media presence has evolved and expanded to reach ever larger cross sections of the Pakistani population, providing an opportunity to tell America's story through visual media, a large and expanding Urdu and Pashto content and constant engagement.  The embassy's messages reach 40 percent of the nearly 6.5 million Pakistanis on Facebook every week, and its Facebook homepage allows the embassy to further connect to the Pakistani people through the messages, events, and pictures/videos that are posted, which have been "liked" by more than 360,000 Pakistanis alone.  Since November 2011, the embassy's Facebook weekly total reach, which measures the number of people who view at least one piece of content on the embassy's page, has burst from 130,000 per week to almost 2.7 million, presenting a 1,800 percent increase in less than 9 months.  The number of people commenting, liking, and sharing content on the embassy's site increased from 560 in November 2011 to 50,000 currently - the highest of any U.S. embassy or consulate around the world.  The embassy is also increasingly using Twitter to communicate with it's 5,500 followers to correct the record and engage journalists, other media contacts, and - by extension - their followings.  The embassy is excited about this growing engagement, especially with the dynamic youth population.

engaged audiences and facilitated cultural exchange between the United States and Comoros by performing with local musicians in each of her concerts and singing Comoran songs about women's empowerment.  Williams, an alumna of Stanford University, reached out to students at high schools and universities to tell them about educational advising and American Corner resources, and about student life in the United States.  As a fellow student, she used her own educational experience to urge students not to let difficulties stop them from realizing their potential.

VOA TV to Iran Streaming on Livestation

Iranians can now watch all of their favorite Voice of America TV shows online with Livestation, a 24 hour a day streaming platform that brings together news programs from around the world.  Viewers in Iran and elsewhere can simply go to the Livestation website and select 'VOA Persian' from the list of regional channels. The site is free and can also be accessed on smart phones as well as an iPhone app.

VOA Executive Editor Steve Redisch says placement of VOA's Persian Service on the streaming site marks a step forward in the delivery of our programs to the people of Iran.  "New research from Gallup shows Internet use is growing in Iran and many people have web access in their homes. It makes sense for us to take advantage of new distribution opportunities," Redisch says.

The latest audience data from Iran indicates VOA Persian TV has a weekly audience of more than 21 percent, making it one of the most popular international broadcasters in the country.

Binational Center Gives Free English Classes to Local Artisans and Taxi Drivers:  On July 3, the U.S. Peru Binational Center (BNC) in Arequipa, Peru, launched free English language classes for local artisans and taxi drivers with the goal of boosting tourism and job creation in Peru's second city.  The innovative program is part of the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) project that recognized this particular English language need. It was made possible through a grant from the PAS Regional English Language Office (RELO).  Its aim is to provide English language instruction to people who come into daily contact with tourists since English is a language shared by people all over the world.  These classes help artisans and taxi drivers to provide better hospitality and service to their guests and clients and thus help to generate jobs by enhancing the reputation and appeal of Arequipa as a welcoming tourist destination.   Each class consists of 30 people who learn an English curriculum especially designed for their particular business needs.  All are adult students who normally would not be able to afford English language instruction at the BNC.
