Glad You Asked

YellowBook Guy
We provide the "Yellow Book" to all new residents. This book answers many questions about recycling and trash. If you'd like a copy please call 480-782-3510.

Can I recycle gift wrap, bows, & ribbon?

No. Gift wrap, tissue paper, ribbons, & bows should not be placed in the blue recycling bin. Wrapping paper contains brightly colored inks, foil, and glitter that are not recyclable.

Can Styrofoam packing material be recycled?

No.  Even though Styrofoam is marked as recyclable, it is not accepted in Chandler's recycling programs.

You can drop off Styrofoam packaging that protects appliances and electronics at Earth Friendly Block in Tempe.

Mailboxes, Etc. & UPS stores frequently accept packing peanuts, smaller Styrofoam blocks and bubble wrap.  Call stores first to be sure they accept this material before you drop-off.

Think Before You Shop

With 25% more trash being generated between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, these short videos encourage everyone to "Think Before You Shop" and offer ideas for reducing, reusing, and recycling during the holidays.
Enjoy and share the message!

The City of Chandler's Solid Waste Services is bringing you a special holiday issue of ReNews.

This issue includes the holiday collection schedule for recycling, trash and Christmas tree collection, showcases new recycling videos, and great articles to help make your holiday season greener than ever.

Happy Holidays!
Season's Eatings

Use the Good Stuff -Reduce the need for paper plates, napkins and disposable utensils as these items are not recyclable in the blue recycling container.Consider using silverware, dinnerware, glasses and cloth napkins.

Pot Luck - Bring food in reusable dishes. If you are hosting, ask guests to do the same. Encourage self-serve to reduce food scraps, and have guests bring Tupperware to take home leftovers!

Compost holiday food leftovers - Backyard composting at home is easy and makes good sense.  You can recycle certain food waste right in your own backyard. The City offers residents free composters and workshops four times a year.

Deep Fried Turkey - Oil from deep fryers and other cooking oils can be brought to the City's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility by appointment. Call 480-782-3510 to schedule.  Cooking oil is collected and recycled to make bio-diesel fuel.

Gift Giving

Be resourceful and practical as well as thoughtful and creative. Think about giving gifts people really want or need.

Gifts that Last - Consider purchasing gifts that are long lasting, can be reused or recycled later. If possible choose items made from recycled materials.

No Gag gifts - Funny for a moment, these gifts are often discarded.

Reduce packaging - Gift cards to a favorite restaurant, store, gift certificates for day at the spa, or tickets to a special event are well received gifts.

Buy vintage - Second-hand or antique shops are great places to do holiday shopping.

Gift that Gives Back - Buy gifts that help farmers and workers around the world through Fair Trade Certified holiday gifts!

Green Roots - Give a potted plant or tree that can be replanted. It will remind someone of your gift year round. Here is a link for the top 10 house plants for the holiday!

Wrapping It Up (or not)

Since gift wrap is not accepted in Chandler's recycling program, rethink the way you wrap presents.

Creative Wrapping Paper - Gifts can be wrapped in reused newspapers, magazines, maps, children's artwork and fabrics.

Reusable Containers -Give items in reusable tins, boxes or baskets.  Wrap kitchen gifts in a colorful dish towel, place gifts for a gardener in a flower pot, beauty products in a makeup bag, etc. Be creative!

Don't try to wrap big gifts. Hide them in another room and send the receiver on a treasure hunt to find their gift!

Gift bags & boxes. Choose gift bags and boxes that can be easily stored and reused.

Save ribbon, bows, and packing material for future use.
Season's Greetings

Due to the bright ink, foil, and glitter greeting cards are not accepted in Chandler's recycling program.  This rings true for photo cards as well.  There are ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle holiday greetings to friends and family:
  • Choose e-cards as a paperless way to send holiday messages
  • Save photo cards you receive in photo albums or frames
  • Cut up holiday cards to make crafts or gift tags for next year
  •  Mail greeting cards to St. Jude's Ranch for Children, a non-profit organization that cares for neglected and abused children. The organization's recycled card program allows youth to learn job skills and make new greeting cards out of donated ones
