To Members of the YPD,
I would like to acknowledge and thank each one of you who worked, planned and assisted during the 2016 Yale University Graduation and Alumni weekends. Each year thousands travel into the City of New Haven to celebrate their loved ones' achievements. Members of the YPD adapt to the many moving parts involved in managing such big events providing a welcoming, safe, and accessible campus for commencement and other related activities.
On to the Summer
As most of you know, over the summer Yale University hosts many different organizations that use its facilities for conferences and events. This summer we will be hosting more individuals than ever before.
We have 105 different conferences and events scheduled from May 29th to August 1st. There will be close to 10,000 youth and adults coming to those conferences and events. The majority of these individuals will be new to the Yale community. The youngest of the participants will be 12 years old. They will be housed at Berkeley, Calhoun, Davenport, Jonathan Edwards, Morse, Old Campus, Pierson, Rosenfeld, Saybrook, Silliman, Timothy Dwight and Trumbull College. Some attendees may be unfamiliar with our campus so our uniformed patrol presence, accessibility, and approachability is extremely important.
EXPLO is back; June 26th is move-in weekend and the start of their first on-campus session. Here at Yale, EXPLO provides a range of one, two and three-week summer camps for students in grades 10 - 12, ages 15 - 17. As in previous years, these students will be housed on Old Campus. But new for this year, the exterior gates of Old Campus will be locked at all times. Phelps Gate will be staffed by Yale Security, by EXPLO personnel and individuals from Yale Conferences and Events. Members of the YPD staffed Phelps Gate this week to help with the transition from Old Campus being open to the public to it being a closed, Yale-community-member-only area. So far, there have been no reported issues with this new implementation.
FLEYA
From July 24th to 29th, the YPD and FBI will host the Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy (FLEYA) which is a summer academy for high school students. There were over 200 applications for this ground-breaking academy. The final selections for the 26 students' seats will be made in the next two weeks. We will need volunteers to help chaperone and help oversee daily, evening and overnight activities of the academy. An email with specific dates and times for volunteers will be forthcoming.
More about FLEYA can be found here:
Again, I want to thank you all in advance for your continued dedication, hard work and professionalism during this extremely busy time.
Sincerely,
Ronnell A. Higgins Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Yale University
