Yale Fleet Management Hosts NAFA Conference
Yale Fleet Management (YFM) recently hosted forty representatives from the corporate, government, and higher education sectors to share lessons learned from their experiences "Managing a University Fleet." Attendees were all members of the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) who were interested in gaining insight into the development and maintenance of a university fleet. Attendees included representatives from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Hartford Water District, City of West Haven, Perkin Elmer, BG Fuels and Cablevision--to name a few.
The one-day event included presentations about Yale's history provided by Administration Woodbridge Fellow Christian Vazquez,;the development of Yale Fleet Management from YFM and Graduate Housing Director George E. Longyear, Jr.; and the particulars of fleets in higher education from YFM Coordinator Ron Gitelman.
The NAFA meeting provided the opportunity for YFM and its peers, in a wide-range of sectors, to share best practices and network. Representatives, from as far away as Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, attended this event to learn more about the evolution of fleet management here at Yale and how those lessons learned can be applied to a much larger public university.
All attendees were also given a tour of the campus and viewed Yale's diverse fleet as grounds maintenance and facilities were busy transitioning the campus from commencement to reunion weekends. YFM hopes to continue such exchanges of knowledge with peers from not only the tri-state area but also across the country.

NAFA is a not-for-profit association for professionals who manage fleets of sedans, public safety vehicles, trucks, and buses of all types and sizes. It provides various services to members including educational opportunities, knowledge sharing, and government and industry relations. It hosts regular chapter planning meetings and a yearly conference.
Ron Gitelman is a board member of the NAFA Inter-County Chapter in New York. They approached him last year asking if Yale would be interested in hosting their yearly planning meeting with the theme "Managing a University Fleet." "We were pleasantly surprised to have twice as many attendees as is the norm. Attendees were very pleased with the presentations, and we hope to stay in touch with many individuals we met through this event," said George Longyear.
