Celebrate the VBA's 125th Anniversary at The Homestead!

As most of you know, in July 1888 more than 100 Virginia attorneys met in Virginia Beach to form what was then called the Virginia State Bar Association. For 50 years, the Virginia State Bar Association was the only statewide bar group. In 1938, after 13 years of hard work by members of the Association, the Virginia State Bar was created by statute. Subsequently, the "State" was dropped from the name of our association and it became known, as it is now, as The Virginia Bar Association.

We hope you'll join us for our Summer Meeting at The Homestead on July 18-21, 2013, to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of the VBA's formation! The much-anticipated gubernatorial debate between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli will be held Saturday morning at the meeting. The debate will be moderated by veteran political journalist Judy Woodruff, co-anchor of the "PBS NewsHour," and should garner national attention.

A general session program on Friday will feature a review of recent Supreme Court decisions and Tom Spahn will do his ever-popular and entertaining two-hour ethics presentation. Our substantive law sections, as always, will present a number of outstanding programs and our Law Practice Management Division will provide a variety of great programming throughout the meeting. Our traditional Friday night banquet will cap off what we anticipate will be a great weekend.

If you haven't been to The Homestead recently, you're in for a real treat! They are just completing a $25 million resort renovation that will provide something for even the most discerning adults and families. Among the new additions at The Homestead you may not have seen are the Canyon Ranch SpaClub (the first such venture by Canyon Ranch in the mid-Atlantic region), the 2-acre Allegheny Springs water attraction with family pool and Mountain Rush (featuring three 100-foot water slides and a 400-foot lazy river), the 18-hole Mini Cascades miniature golf course (inspired by the legendary Cascades Course), and the new lobby bar, among others.

Kathleen and I look forward to seeing you at The Homestead and to celebrating the VBA's 125th anniversary with you.

Have a great weekend!

Tom
