FIRST GENERATION CELEBRATION

12:00 p.m. ~ DSC Ledbetter A & 6:00 p.m.~Dickinson Auditorium A panel discussion will follow both showings, facilitated by the Directors, UALR First Generation Students & University Administrators.
Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, FIRST GENERATION tells the story of four high school students - an inner city athlete, a small town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers - who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families & communities by pursuing a college education! Shot over the course of three years, this 95 minute documentary explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students and how their success has major implications for the future of our nation.

WANTED: First Generation Students
To Tell Their Story
If you are a First Generation Student and would like to have your story documented, this is your chance! We will be videotaping on Tues., Oct. 30 and Wed., Oct. 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in DSC 201A. Please have your story ready and try to keep it under 5 minutes. We will tape in the order in which you arrive, so there is no need to register in advance. If you can't or don't want to videotape your story but still want to share, please submit your written story (max 500 words) to cmalexander@ualr.edu. If you want your name to be withheld, please indicate that in the body of your email.
We will be showing this video on Wednesday, November 7 at the First Generation Celebration and they will be posted on our website.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Tuesday ~ DSC Solicitation Area from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please stop by our information table to get information about early detection, prevention and pick up a ribbon pin and bracelet to show your support.
Thursday ~ DSC Ledbetter C 11:00 a.m. ~ 1:00 p.m. Presenters Shakia Jackson and Kimberly S. Enoch, from the UAMS Cancer Control Program will discuss preventative measures women can take. After the informative presentation, Erica Harris, a breast cancer survivor, will tell her personal story. This event is free to the campus community and a light lunch will be served.
