Greetings!
I recently returned from the second advisory board meeting on the new PDS plate from Mentor. The first meeting was 1 year ago and its purpose was to obtain expert rhinoplasty opinion on this product prior to its launch. This most recent meeting was to discuss our experience with the product after its past year of use.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the device, it has significant use in complex rhinoplasty and septoplasty procedures. It is composed of PDS and resorbs after approximately 6 months, making it an excellent scaffold, bridge, and stabilizer for cartilage in the nose. It is sold in varying thicknesses: 0.15mm, 0.25mm, and 0.5mm.
The product can be used as a cantilever or cross bar graft for high septal deviations, in septal extension grafts, caudal end septal transplants, piecing together small cartilage fragments for a strut or spreader, and septal perforations. It is low profile, thin, and has allowed me to place cartilage end to end rather than side to
side - which may have caused some valve obstruction in the past. I have not had any complications after utilizing it in 10-15 cases and feel that I have had great success with the plate thus far.
The PDS plate does not replace the need for cartilage, but does allow for excellent support and stabilization when cartilage is warped, fragile, or scarce. We are still learning much about this plate and excited for its use in other aspects of nasal surgery. Looking forward to sharing more in the future.
