Girls studying Spring Second Start Session Added
Hocking College is offering a second start of the spring 2015 semester. Second Start courses are full credit courses that will be taught over eight weeks instead of 16 weeks. Classes will begin Monday, March 16, 2015.

Current students can pick up an additional class or classes to get ahead or get back on schedule with their program. Any student who wants to add a class that can absorb the tuition within his or her 12-16 credits will only have to pay the class fees as the tuition will fall within the range. Other students will have to pay out of pocket as their funding sources have already been allocated. Students who wish to take a class and pay out of pocket can pay the full amount at time of registration or can sign up for a three month payment plan with payments due March 1, April 1 and May 1.

Registration for the Second Start session is now open, the last day to register for the session is the first Friday of the term, March 20, 2015. The last day to drop a class in this term is March 28, 2015.

Classes can be scheduled through WebAdvisor. The easiest way to find these classes on the "search for sections" page in WebAdvisor is to not select a term, rather use the "starting on/after date" field with 03/16/15 and then the end of term date of 05/08/15.

Please help get the word out to students about this opportunity.
College Exceeds Spring Enrollment Goals, Registration Dates Set for Summer, Autumn
Through a comprehensive enrollment campaign, new student enrollment for spring 2015 was 158 percent of the goal established in the fall, with 1,099 new students for the semester. The goal for returning students was also exceeded, with 3,860 students returning for spring semester. The goal had been 3,474.

Great job to the admissions department, faculty and staff members throughout the college who helped achieve the new student number! Everyone throughout campus also participated to boost the retention rate a full 10 percent, from 70 percent retention from autumn to spring term 2013-14 to 80 percent retention this year. This led to an actual increase in students from autumn to spring semester, a reversal of the attrition that usually happens between autumn to spring semester.

Registration dates for summer 2015 and autumn 2015 have been set. Advising will take place March 16-20. Priority registration for online military and veteran students is Monday, March 23; open registration for all students begins March 24. Please encourage current students to register before they leave campus for the summer.

2014 President's List Recipients
President's List Application Available

Students with a 3.5 or higher accumulative grade point average and a minimum of 24 Hocking College credit hours will receive an invitation to apply for consideration for the President's List. Students are asked to apply online this year via this survey. Those selected for the President's List demonstrate outstanding leadership and service, and maintain the highest academic standards.

Faculty and staff endorsements are critical in the selection process. Endorsements with specific information, completed by staff that work closely with a student and have first-hand knowledge of leadership skills and service activities, are a powerful point of consideration in the process. If you cannot provide specific information on leadership and service, please refer the student to another staff member for endorsement.

Students are ineligible for consideration if endorsement forms are not part of their portfolios at the time of review. This year's endorsements are due March 16, 2015. This year, endorsements are to be submitted online. The selection committee will meet after the deadline to select those fitting the criteria.

Hocking College Earns Tree Campus USA Recognition

Hocking College has recently earned the 2014 Tree Campus USA designation.

In order to be recognized, Hocking College had to meet the five core standards of a sustainable campus required by Tree Campus USA. These five standards include establishing a tree advisor committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicate annual expenses for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Hocking College is one of 11 Ohio Colleges to earn this recognition, and the only Southeastern Ohio campus to earn the designation.

Tree Campus USA is a national program, which launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, this program honors colleges and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

Alumni Spotlight

Game Warden Busy in Ashtabula
Jason Warren, a Hocking alumni, is Ashtabula County's game warden.

Warren graduated Hocking College with an associate's degree before starting his career as a game warden. Warren has been a game warden for the past seven years; he worked in Wayne and Summit counties before going to Ashtabula in 2013. Ashtabula is the biggest county in the state, so it is busier than his previous counties.
"I get to be a law enforcement officer, teacher and biologist all in the same day," Warren said of his varied job expectations.

He spends about half of his time at work on law enforcement, the rest of his time is split between educating the public, recruiting hunters and wildlife research.

Warren, who loves the outdoors, fishing and hunting has found a profession which combines the things he truly enjoys, so if you love what you do is it truly work?

For more information on Jason Warren, visit the Ashtabula Star-Beacon.

Hocking College Adds Free Basic Physical Defense Classes for Women at Perry Campus

The Hocking College Police Department (HCPD) will offer an additional free Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Systems class for women this April.  Due to the success of the initial RAD class offerings, an additional class has been added at the Perry Campus on April 11 and April 12 from 11 a.m. - 4 pm.

The primary focus of the system is designed for women to become aware of self-defense options during situations of possible or actual assaults. According to R.A.D. Systems, the crime of rape is reported so infrequently that society in general has become unaware of such incidents. Until it happens to 'them' or someone 'they' know and love, its just another headline, just another crime that happens to someone else. In order to overcome this common view, R.A.D. Systems' purpose is to empower women through key elements of self-defense: educate women on the topic, encourage self-dependence and teach the importance of decision-making and understanding physical power.

Hocking College Chief of Police Al Matthews has worked with the HCPD to invest in training its personnel in the instruction of R.A.D. physical defense principles and is excited to offer basic self-defense classes for the women of the community. "We're looking forward to offering several classes each semester, each year. Looking to the future, we plan to offer the women of our community more advanced R.A.D. classes to continue their education and fine tune their skills," Chief Matthews said.

The nine-hour class sessions will teach participants important sexual assault definitions, risk reduction strategies, date rape information, weapon safety, defensive movements and motions, and other self-defense knowledge to prevent future harm. This is a course of carefully selected defensive tactics with helpful guidelines for continued personal growth.

There is no registration fee, but class size is limited, interested individuals should register soon to guarantee their spot. Contact Angela Perrigio at 740.753.6598 or [email protected] for registration or more information about the classes.
