Culinary Faculty Member Receives ROAR Award

The American Culinary Federation's (ACF) Columbus Chapter recently awarded Kathryn McGushin the ROAR award. ACF explains that the recipient of the ROAR award is defined by their ability to show outstanding service leadership, volunteerism, loyalty and a dedication to the chapter.

Chef McGushin is a culinary arts faculty member at Hocking College.

McGushin's recognition was specific to her work with the Knowledge Bowl team over the past three years and her work as an educator. The Knowledge Bowl is an ACF competition resembling jeopardy where participants are quizzed on culinary terms, history, classical methods of cooking, science of ingredients and ingredient identification.

In 2013 and 2014, Chef McGushin led Hocking College's Knowledge Bowl team to second place out of nine teams in the regional finals. Hocking's team won second place two years in a row and was the only school from Ohio in the competition.

"The American Culinary Federation sets the standards for our profession, so to receive such a great award recognizing my efforts with our culinary students here at Hocking, we affirming that we truly are one of the best culinary schools in the state/region," McGushin said.

Great job, Chef Katie!

Hocking Woods Nature Center Welcomes Two New Owls

The Hocking Woods Nature Center recently welcomed two new educational raptors, Grey phase eastern screech owls, Luna and Odin.

Both birds came from Back To The Wild in Castalia Ohio, where they were deemed non-releasable. Each bird has one eye, Luna has a good left eye, Odin has a good right eye. These birds will be used in addition to the Center's existing red tailed hawks for educational purposes. The birds are given names not because they are pets or property, but to better care for them on a day-to-day basis.

They are currently being observed for problems from being in a new environment with a new routine, but they seem to be adjusting fine.

Students in the college's Natural and Historical Interpretation program use the Nature Center to design activities, learn about the eco-system and provide care for injured birds in the Raptor Rehab Center.

Police Academy Earns 100 Percent Pass Rate

The 2014 autumn semester Police Academy class at Hocking College received a perfect pass rate on their physical conditioning test and the State certification exam in January 2015. The fall semester class consisted of 19 full time cadets and one prior equivalent cadet. This success was achieved by the last four academies, due to the excellent teaching skills of OPATA instructors.

The Police Science program at Hocking College prepares students to become a law enforcement professional in the state of Ohio. This program provides hands on training in criminalistics, photography, interrogation techniques and dispatching practices.

"This success was due to the work of our adjunct instructors and the drive instilled in the cadets." Roger Deardorff, Hocking Police Academy Commander, said. "From the very first day of the Academy they are told failure is not an option. We expect a 100 percent pass rate."

Career opportunities for law enforcement officers are available at the state and local level in police departments, sheriff offices and state enforcement agencies. Career opportunities for private security include providing security for medical, chemical, financial, commerce, housing, retail and entertainment industries.

NR Law Students Volunteer at the 51st Annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike

The 51st Annual Winter Hike took place January 17, 2015. Hocking College Natural Resources Law students and faculty attended the hike and and volunteered their assistance as their 2015 service learning requirement.

Hikers assembled around 9 a.m. at Hocking Hills State Park Campground. The hike was about six miles long and started at Old Man's Cave and ended at Ash Cave. Last year around 5,600 hikers were in attendance.

Hikers enjoy the fresh air, beautiful snow-kissed scenery, exercise and great food.

Hocking Hills is home to Ohio's oldest tree and largest Cave. While hiking this six-mile trail, participants are actually hiking three trails at the sane time. This trail is part of two national systems: the North Country Scenic Trail and America's Discovery Trail.

RecycleMania Starts Today

KICK OFF!! The Super Bowl game may be over but a new RecycleMania season starts today!

Hocking College needs you to recycle more and waste less. We are competing against 300+ colleges nationwide starting today and competing through April 4. Our closest competing school is Ohio University who was one of the co-founders of the competition in 2001.

Hocking College faculty, staff and students must all unite to win this championship and put Hocking College on the map. How can we win?

  • Recycle all possible materials (and throw less into your trashcan): Glass, cans, paper, cardboard, and all types of plastic

More than 40 years after the first Earth Day celebration, recycling is commonplace in many communities, yet a surprisingly high amount of recyclables still go in the trash. By framing recycling in competitive terms, RecycleMania seeks to tap school spirit as a motivator to reach students who may not otherwise respond to environmental messages. In the process, the program works to reinforce the practice of recycling at an age when many college students are forming the habits and values they will carry the rest of their lives.
