January 2015:
Welcome to Spring Semester Edition
Celebrate MLK: "I Have a Dream"

Celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, January 20 from 1 - 4 p.m. with this interactive exhibit in the spirit of MLK to explore the dreams of the student body at Hocking College. All are welcome to attend this event.

At 6 p.m., enjoy a free showing of "The Long Walk to Freedom" in the Student Center. This 2013 movie is a chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. A discussion will follow.
Hocking College Student Lives the "Little Mermaid" Dream
Growing up, many girls watched "The Little Mermaid" and wondered what it would be like to have a tail and swim around just like Ariel. Hocking College now has their very own mermaid and her name is April Street.

April is from Canton, Ohio and is in her second year studying art and Baking. According to April, she was interested in mermaids when she was young but had not thought about them in recent years. She became interested in them again after seeing a mermaid tail online.

She bought her mermaid tail at finfunmermaid.com using money she got for Christmas. It is made from swimsuit material. She is the first person from her family or friends to try a mermaid tail, April said, but her sister seems to be interested in them, too.

After graduation, April said she would like to have her first full-time job working in a movie theater. Long-term she wants to own a banquet hall with her family. Her sister would cook and April would make the sweets; cakes and cupcakes are her specialty. April said if an opportunity to work as a professional mermaid would present itself she would take it, although professional mermaid tails are more expensive.

April brings her swimsuit and mermaid tail to the Student Center and swims laps when she has time. She said the mermaid tail is a good work out but takes a little practice to get used to. The other swimmers are taking well to the new visitor and enjoy watching her swim around. April is an inspiration, encouraging others to following their dreams and be true to who they are.

Students who are also student employees will receive a Form W-2. The Form W-2 reports an employee's annual wages and the amount of taxes withheld from his or her paycheck.

Both of these forms will be available by January 31. Students can register to receive either or both forms electronically through their WebAdvisor account.
