snowy-treescape.jpg Guidelines for Adverse Weather

As we enter the time period for inclement weather, please review the following information about campus closure.  Individual employees must make their own decision regarding their safety in traveling to work.

Closing Campus
Hocking College will be open for classes except in cases of extreme danger (such as ice), emergency, or mandated closing by public officials (such as when the water supply is unavailable.) There will be a number of times when the public schools might close while the campus remains open.

As weather conditions may be different for each of our campuses, individual locations of Hocking College may close. Also, the campus may cancel only morning classes and reopen for afternoon and evening classes.

Human Resources
During bad weather, employees can contact the Human Resources Call-Off Line at 740.753.7096. This number will provide daily information to employees in regard to emergency closures for all campus locations and still allow you to leave a voicemail reporting your absence or tardiness if the college is open.

Listed below are the identified Level One Emergency Personnel. Each designated Level One Personnel is responsible for notifying other employees when their services are required during an emergency. Any bargaining unit employees required to work will be compensated in accordance with their specific bargaining unit agreement.

Level One Emergency Personnel
For the information of the Hocking College community, Level One Emergency Personnel are identified in the Emergency Management Guide as the following positions:

  • President
  • Vice President of
    Administrative and Student Services
  • Vice President of Financial and Technology Services
  • Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs
  • General Counsel, Vice President of Compliance and Human Resources,
  • Chief Information Officer
  • Police Chief
  • Director of Residence Life
  • Director of Physical Plant
  • Director of Food Services
  • Director of Marketing & Public Relations
Those employees who are designated Level One Emergency Personnel are required to be on campus in the event of emergencies and/or cancellations.

Communication of Closure
Any change of schedule or cancellation of classes will be communicated as soon as it is known. Students, faculty, staff and all other members of the campus community should consider signing up for NIXLE at nixle.com, as NIXLE is the first notification to be sent in case of a closure. Closure information will also be posted on our website (hocking.edu) and our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HockingCollege.Ohio) and announced on these radio or television stations. The stations will be notified by at least 7 a.m. Do not call the college switchboard.

Nutrition Classes Teach Health Eating
Hocking College and other local organizations are assisting low-income families through healthy eating education. The Family Nutrition Program targets participants in the Food Stamp Program and other U.S. Department of Agriculture food-assistance programs.

The new partnership between OSU Extension, Hocking County's SNAP-Ed program, Hocking Metropolitan Housing Authority, Southeastern Ohio Foodbank and Kitchen and Hocking College Culinary Arts Program is taking participants from Hocking Metro Housing and offering educational classes at Logan Village Apartments community room. The classes provide information on shopping for food, fruits and vegetables, eating more whole grains and protein rich foods and dairy. Participants then attend a hands-on course with Chef Kate McGushin, Hocking College Culinary Arts faculty. The class meets at the SE Ohio Foodbank Kitchen, where they can use what they have learned to prepare healthy meals with guided recipes.

All the ingredients for the recipes are donated by Hocking College Culinary Arts program and the South East Ohio Foodbank and Kitchen. The program is grant-funded through USDA Food and Nutrition and is administered by the Office of the Department of Jobs and Family Services in Ohio.

Hocking Students Move Lancaster Maple Tree

On Friday, November 14, Hocking College students participated in a rescue effort to transport a local red maple tree from the corner of Sixth and Madison avenues to Lancero Park in Lancaster, a short distance down the road.

The red maple tree was beginning to grow into an overhead power line, and was asked to be trimmed or cut down. Director of Physical Plant Operations at Hocking College, Andrew Freeman organized the movement of the tree with the help of students.

Freeman stated the transportation of the tree would not harm the it, with fall being the best season to move it because its dormant state. With its new home in Lancero Park the tree can grow unharmed to reach 60 to 90 feet in height and live for 70 to 80 years. The tree's spot on Sixth Ave. was replaced with a smaller tree known as a serviceberry tree, which will sprout white blossoms in the springtime and leave the electrical wires untouched.

The whole movement came at very little cost to Lancaster Parks and Recreation Department. The tree will be closely monitored to ensure its survival in its new home.

Tips from WellWorks: Gratitude is Good
Grateful people are more aware of all the people in their life looking out for them. They notice when someone else has provided for their well-being, and they are in tune to the network of relationships responsible for where they are today. Realizing other people see value in you, helps you transform the way you see yourself.

Healthy Monday Challenge:  Who has contributed to your self-worth? How can you contribute to someone else's? Take a minute of your day to thank someone for all that they do.
