Police Science Alum Has Successful Career

Thomas Smith '89 is a graduate of Police Science and the Hocking College Peace Officer Academy. After graduation he went on to hold numerous careers in law enforcement including working for Meigs County Sheriffs Department, Pomeroy Police Department and teaching and working for Hocking College Police Science. He went on to work for Athens County Sheriff's Department until his retirement in 2012.

"Since graduating, the foundation this school gave me prepared me to excel," Smith states.

Before coming to Hocking, Smith spent 22 years in the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. His work with the Navy included administration duties, coordinating group therapy and counseling sessions, and running drug programs. After his retirement from the Navy Smith became a member of AMVETS.

Smith's military and educational background led him to transition his career into mental health services. In the early 90's Smith joined the mental health community as a chemical dependency counselor and intervention drug program coordinator.

Alongside his military background and successful work history, Smith was an active member in his community. His dedication and passion for what he does has drove him to become an amazing and experienced individual in both his career and community life. He has worked as a volunteer fire fighter captain and ran Veterans Helping Veterans support groups.

Most recently Smith has obtained the position of State Commander for the AMVETS Department of Ohio. He tells current and future students the key to success starts in school, "take it serious, what you learn here can save you out on the street."

Memorial Garden Ceremony Honors Veterans

On Monday, November 10, Hocking College held a re-dedication ceremony for the Staff Sgt. Curtis A. "Moose" Oakes Veterans Memorial Garden and honored all veterans for their service to our country.  Oakes '02, a natural resources alumn, died in action on November 29, 2010. An oak tree was planted in his honor in front of Light Hall on Hocking's main campus, accompanied by a plaque with his name in 2011.

Hocking College landscape management students and greens staff have since been working to develop the tree into a garden to honor veterans. The re-dedication ceremony was held to acknowledge the completion of the garden, and honor Oakes' five fellow servicemen who died in action with him. The Veterans Memorial Garden now serves as a beacon on campus, representing all that our service men and women have done for us.

Chairmen of the Hocking College Board of Trustees Lt. Col. Andrew Stone spoke at the ceremony regarding the relationship between military and education in America. "Beyond their military service, veterans are great students, great employees and great community members. They can suffer hardship without complaint. They are high achievers. United Stated Military veterans built America," Stone said.

Hocking Students Rescue Red Maple Tree

On Friday, November 14, Hocking College students participated in a rescue effort to transport a local red maple tree from the corner of Sixth and Madison Avenues to Lancero Park in Lancaster, a short distance down the road.

The red maple tree was beginning to grow into an overhead power line, and was asked to be trimmed or cut down. Director of Physical Plant Operations at Hocking College, Andrew Freeman organized the movement of the tree with the help of students.

Freeman stated the transportation of the tree would not harm it, with fall being the best season to move it because of its dormant state. With its new home in Lancero Park, the tree can grow unharmed to reach 60 to 90 feet in height and live for 70 to 80 years. The tree's spot on Sixth Avenue was filled with a smaller tree known as a serviceberry tree, which will sprout white blossoms in the springtime and leave the electrical wires untouched.

The whole movement came at very little cost to Lancaster Parks and Recreation Department. The tree will be closely monitored to ensure its survival in its new home.

Hocking Partners on Program Focused on Healthy Eating

Hocking College and other local organizations are assisting low-income families through healthy eating education. The Family Nutrition Program targets participants in the Food Stamp Program and other U.S. Department of Agriculture food-assistance programs.

The new partnership between OSU Extension, Hocking County's SNAP-Ed program; Hocking Metropolitan Housing Authority; Southeastern Ohio Foodbank and Kitchen; and Hocking College Culinary Program is taking participants from Hocking Metro Housing and offering educational classes at Logan Village Apartments community room. The classes provide information on shopping for food, fruits and vegetables, eating more whole grains and protein rich foods and dairy. The class prepares them for a hands-on course at the end of the month with Chef Kate McGushin, a member of Hocking College Culinary Arts program. Participants will meet at the SE Ohio Foodbank Kitchen, where they can use what they have learned to prepare healthy meals with guided recipes.

All the ingredients for the recipes are donated by Hocking College Culinary Arts program and the South East Ohio Foodbank and Kitchen. The program is grant-funded through USDA Food and Nutrition and is administered by the Office of the Department of Jobs and Family Services in Ohio.
