Spring Semester Advising and Registration Begins
Priority registration for spring semester 2015 will begin on Monday, November 10 and run through November 12. Open registration will begin on Thursday, November 13.

Starting with registration for spring semester 2015, we will once again be requiring payment at the time of registration.  Students will still be able to register either within their departments, with their faculty advisor or on WebAdvisor.  However, within three business days of registering, students must visit the Cashier's Office in the Student Services Concourse in Light Hall or at the Logan or Perry Campus to sign the Registration Terms & Conditions/Student Financial Responsibility Agreement and review their financial arrangements.  Students who fail to do this within three business days will have their schedule dropped, and will need to begin the registration process again.

After registering students, provide them with the attached flyer to remind them to visit the Cashier's Office within three business days.  Students will not be able to make any changes to their schedule until the Registration Terms & Conditions/Student Financial Responsibility Agreement is completed at the Cashier's Office.  Keep in mind, faculty should not permit students to be in classes without being registered. We hope that this registration process will continue going forward, but please let us know if you have any suggestions for improvement.

Spring 2015 QuickStart events will be held Friday, November 21 and Friday, December 5 starting at 9:30 a.m. each day. QuickStart and Returning Student Registration Events will be held Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10, 2015, starting at 9:30 a.m. each day.

The Student Services Concourse will have extended service hours to support spring 2015 registration:
  • January 6, 7, 8 (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday): 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • January 10 (Saturday): 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • January 12 - 15 (Monday - Thursday) 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Donatos Coupon Book Sales Benefit National Freedom Center

The BUS2130 Sales classes, instructed by Amy Shaner and Scott Elliott, are selling Donatos coupon books. The books contain more than $30.00 in savings and sell for $5.00.

The class decided they would like to contribute the money they earned to Natural Freedom. Natural Freedom Equine and Outdoor Experiential Center utilizes horses for everything from counseling sessions to leadership and team building exercises. They are in the process of establishing a mobile unit and will use funds our classes raise to further the mobile unit's development.

The classes recently went to Natural Freedom for a field trip.  There the students experienced some of their leadership training sessions, where students also learned that leadership can be learned, and that horses have no prejudices. Students participated in a team building exercise in an eight-person group, in which they attempted to load a horse in a trailer without touching the horse.  They were successful on both attempts, although the horse was much more cooperative on the first.

Take a look at the Hocking College Flickr page for additional photos from the trip.

If you would like to purchase coupon books, please contact Amy Shaner at 740.753.7158 or at [email protected] or Scott Elliott at 740.753.7184 or [email protected] and a student will be sent to sell the book to you.

Alumni Spotlight

Police Science Degree Leads Veteran to Fulfilling Career

Thomas Smith graduated from the Hocking College Peace Officer Academy in 1987 and again in 1989 with an associate degree in Police Science. After graduation, he went on to hold numerous positions in law enforcement including working for the Meigs County Sheriffs Department and Pomeroy Police Department, and teaching and working for the Hocking College Police Science program. He then worked for the Athens County Sheriff's Department until his retirement in 2012.

"Since graduating, the foundation this school gave me prepared me to excel," Smith states.

Before coming to Hocking, Smith spent 22 years in the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. His work with the Navy included administration duties, coordinating group therapy and counseling sessions, and running drug prevention and treatment programs. After his retirement from the Navy, Smith became a member of AMVETS.

Smith's military and educational background led him to transition his career into mental health services. In the early 90s, Smith joined the mental health community as a chemical dependency counselor and intervention drug program coordinator.

Alongside his military background and successful work history, Smith has been an active member of his community. His dedication and passion for what he does has drove him to become an amazing and experienced individual in both his career and community life. He has worked as a volunteer fire fighter captain and ran Veterans Helping Veterans support groups.

Most recently, Smith has obtained the position of State Commander for the AMVETS Department of Ohio. He tells current and future students the key to success starts in school, "take it serious, what you learn here can save you out on the street."
