Hocking College Holds Veterans Memorial Garden Ceremony
Hocking College will hold a commemorative ceremony for the opening of Staff Sgt. Curtis A. "Moose" Oakes Veterans Memorial Garden on November 10, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
The Hocking College Veterans Memorial Fund was established to honor and memorialize Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes, also known as "Moose," who died while serving his country in Afghanistan in 2010. Staff Sgt. Oakes was a graduate of the College of Natural Resources at Hocking College. As part of the Memorial Garden a single oak tree was planted on September 24, 2011 to honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Oakes and serve as an "anchor" to the garden. The tree is accompanied by a bronze plaque, which sits besides it in the center of the garden in front of Light Hall.
"Since the planting, Valarie Oakes (Curtis' mother) dreamed of honoring others who have fought for our freedom. Today we celebrate the realization of her dream," Libby Villavicencio, Executive Director of the Hocking College Foundation, said regarding the unveiling of the Memorial Garden.
Honored guests will be in attendance at the ceremony, including Dr. Roger P. Buck the Director of Counseling Services with Hocking College, Chaplain (Captain) Dawn Israel with the 371st Sustainment Battalion of the Ohio National Guard, Andrew Stone with the Hocking College Board of Trustees and Kathleen Young, Southwest Regional Liaison for Governor John Kasich.
The garden was designed and constructed by the Landscape Management Programs and Campus Greens staff of Hocking College. The public is invited to attend the ceremony the Monday before Veterans Day to support and honor our troops who have served their country.

Hocking's Hocktoberfest Participates in Zero Waste Initivative
On Saturday, October 4, 2014 Hocking College Sustainability Director Kathleen Temple-Miller and volunteers worked together in reducing the waste at Hocktoberfest as part of the Zero Waste Initiative.
The Zero Waste Initiative works to benefit both the environment and local economy through recycling. This year, Hocktoberfest was able to divert 71 percent its total waste, adding up to 224 pounds of compostable materials and 66 pounds of recyclables. While this did not meet the 90 percent requirement of a Zero Waste event it certainly set the way for future improvements in the local economy and environment.
Support provided from vendors at the festival made a large impact, as they used only material that was compostable. Other contributors to the success include Rural Action, Ohio University Office of Recycling and Refuse, Athens-Hocking Recycling Center and the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District.
"Hocktoberfest is on the path to Zero Waste success with this initial event thanks to vendor support and a tremendous team of volunteers. Next year we'll consider every aspect of the event as opposed to just the food vendors to maximize waste stream recovery efforts," Kathleen exclaims about the hope for future success in Zero Waste.
