School of Allied Health Hosts Successful Breast Cancer Lunch and Learn
Messenger photo by Sarah Hawley
The Breast Cancer Lunch and Learn, which took place last Thursday, October 23, brought in more than two dozens students, faculty and staff to educate them on the risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer.

The event was sponsored by the Hocking College School of Allied Health in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and featured speaker and certified nurse practitioner Melanie Moynan-Smith. Moynan-Smith stressed the importance of monthly self-breast examinations to detect early signs of cancer. After her speech, participants were able to visit displays to practice what they had learned.

"We want to help students understand and be aware," said Dean of the School of Allied Health, Bonnie Allen Smith. Allen Smith hopes that the Breast Cancer Lunch and Learn becomes the first in a series of events pertaining to various health issues throughout the year.

The event was featured an article in the Athens Messenger.
Board of Trustees Meeting

valentines-cookies.jpg Help Support the Student Food Pantry
Kris Williams' students will hold two bake sales and a canned food drive to raise money and collect canned goods for the Hocking College Food Pantry.

The sales will be Wednesday, October 29 and Wednesday, November 5, from 1 - 3:30 p.m. each day, with tables in the Student Center and the Dining Hall.

Purchase bake sales goods with cash - all are $1.00 or less, or with cans of food. One can of food = two cookies. Bring canned goods or non-perishables that need minimal preparation (only need a microwave) - such as soup, stew, Easy Mac, fruit and vegetables.

Help support these students and the Food Pantry.
College Gallery Hosts Solo Artist Photography Exhibition
The Hocking College Art Gallery will feature a solo artist photography exhibition featuring Tim Creamer beginning on October 31, 2014 with an opening reception from 6-9 p.m. during Nelsonville Historic Square Final Friday event.

The exhibit will feature modern photography created with iPhone 4/5s apps including Hipstamatic, iColorama and Snapseed. With technological innovation, artists no longer need a "real' camera to develop and portray their work. The accessibility of the iPhone and its apps allow instant sharing and feedback from fellow artists through social media sites.

Artist Tim Creamer states that his inspiration for his art came when he was introduced to a Facebook group, "Tintype Hipstamatic," which features works created using Tintype filter pack in any combination.

"Just as important as creating images, this community offers feedback and encouragement. Social media is a boon to my creative process, as I no longer work in a creative vacuum. I find myself pushing the limits as other international artists in this group are now doing; we show, share, and encourage each other. This body of work is a testament to this process," Creamer said.

The exhibition runs through November 2, 2014. The Hocking College Art Gallery is located at 30 Public Square in Nelsonville and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12-5 p.m.
ID Theft Lunch and Learn

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the event, with a free lunch provided in DVD 108. Anyone interested in attending should RSVP no later than Monday, November 10 to Linda Deeds at deedsl@hocking.edu. Please be sure to include any special dietary needs

Campus Sustainability Update
Our main campus has an improved recycling campaign and your help is needed to become a Zero Waste Campus. Imagine if we all had Zero Waste office spaces and we could end our costly landfill services.

Recycling is more than just saving money...
  • Enough energy is saved by recycling one aluminum can to run a TV for three hours or to light one 100 watt bulb for 20 hours.
  • Making cans from recycled aluminum saves 95 percent of the energy required to produce cans from virgin material.

The following are a few key recycling points:

  • We can now recycle all types of plastics (1-7)
  • No separation is required but please leave shredded paper in the bags (these can be recycled too.)
  • Throwing away a messy container can do more harm than good.  Please wash all messy jars and plastic containers to avoid contaminating other recyclables.
  • Please recycle all pizza boxes even if they contain a grease residue.
  • Large volumes of cardboard need to placed into one of the cardboard dumpsters on campus.  This saves the college money since those containers are serviced free of charge and don't take up space in our single stream recycling containers.
  •  Signage will be changed soon to reflect these changes.
Are you planning an event on campus?  Please contact the Office of Sustainability at extension 6282 for help in making your next event Zero Waste!

We want you! Do you have ideas on ways that we can become more sustainable? Or, do you have student interns or service learning projects in mind? Contact Kathy Temple-Miller at templek3907@hocking.edu with any questions or ideas. The following are a few projects that are being reviewed at Hocking College:

  • Utility costs and energy saving measures
  • Composting (Equine and Dining Services)
  • Recycling logistics on all campuses
  • Zero Waste event management
  • Website with utility dashboards (utility monitoring)
  • Sustainability curricula

Alumni Spotlight

Graduate Recognized for Wildlife Photography

Jim Mundy, a graduate of the Hocking College Wildlife Sciences program is making quite the impression in Cincinnati. After graduation, Mundy followed his childhood passion for nature and got a position with the Stewardship Department for Hamilton County Park District. His love for the job carried him through every land management capacity until reaching his desired job as Wildlife Specialist.

What is really grabbing local attention, however, is Mundy's photography skills. He spends much of his private time in nature, capturing every moment through film. Mundy has been sharing his skill set by teaching photography classes and taking his students on nature walkthroughs for field practice. His photography skills are not just admired locally but statewide, with one of his photos of the Eastern Bluebird being selected by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to receive the 2015 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp.

To see Mundy's photos you can visit his photography website, "Nature's Ark Photography."

Special thanks to Janice Smith, Marty Skeeles, Darlene Tipple, Donna Wamsley, Dawn Shingler and Chloe Phillips for organizing this event.
