October 2014:
Halloween Edition
A Message from the Interim College President

Dear Students:

As you may have heard, over the past few weeks some pretty big changes have taken place in the upper management at Hocking College. You may have learned about the changes through the news, Facebook posts or rumors, which may or may not be accurate, but all may be unsettling to you.

Regardless of what is said, the fact is Hocking College has been around since 1968 and like all large organizations, experiences occasional periods of transition and flux. This is one of those times. We have a long history and a great reputation for educating and serving our students. With outstanding faculty and innovative programming, Hocking College has always been and will continue to be a strong force in educating our future workforce throughout the region and the world.

Administrators may come and go, but keep in mind, the mission of the college is bigger than any one person. Every person who works at the college, from our faculty, to our support, professional and administrative staff, has one goal in mind - to make your experience here at Hocking College the best it can be.

If you have specific concerns about the current situation, please don't hesitate to speak with your faculty or the dean of your school. You are the reason we are here, and we want you to succeed. Have a great semester, work hard, have fun and enjoy your Hocking College experience.

Dr. Myriah Davis
Interim President
Hocking College
Halloween on Campus
The Athens Alternative Halloween party is this Saturday, October 25, starting at 8 p.m. in the Hocking College Student Center. The event will be a "casino night" featuring various games, movies, pizza and a chance to win prizes. This is a drug and alcohol free event designed for students who do not wish to go to Athens for the block party. The event is co-sponsored by the campus Drug and Alcohol Prevention group.

A Community Halloween celebration will also be held on Thursday, October 30 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Student Center, following Nelsonville's Trick or Treat. An inflatable playground, climbing, fair food, costume contests, face painting and more will be available. The Nelsonville-York Marching Band will also be performing.

halloween-pumpkin-header.jpg A Note About Halloween Festivities
This Halloween, Hocking College and Athens will be popular destinations for many Ohio college students. To keep the large crowds secure, liquor enforcement officers will be in town, and the State Highway Patrol will be active in surrounding counties and cities. They will be heavily patrolling roadways leading in and out of Nelsonville and Athens. Some students think that what happens in Athens stays in Athens. This is not always true. Arrest records can haunt you later as you prepare for careers in one of the many programs offered here at Hocking.

Students may be tempted to drive under the influence due to a scarcity of places to stay in the Athens area. Route 33 in both directions will be under tighter control than usual. If you choose to drink, please designate a driver. All Ohio laws apply on Halloween weekend. Some students mistakenly think that it is like Mardi Gras, and anything goes. Please have respect for the city and the college as well as private property. Please use sound judgement and proceed safely as you prepare for the fun surrounding Halloween weekend.

George Petrovay
Director of Student Rights, Responsibilities & Judicial Affairs
Party Smart This Halloween!
If you are going to the block party:
  • Pick a costume that does not look like a law enforcement officer.
  • Don't carry an accessory that is or looks like a weapon.
  • Have a designated driver, who will not be drinking.
  • Be aware that every year a number of students are arrested on charges of drunk and disorderly, open container, public urination and underage consumption.
If you are hosting a party
  • Only serve alcohol to persons who are 21 and over.
  • You are responsible for your guests. Residents can be charged for the actions of their guests.
  • Keep alcohol on private property.
  • Monitor the noise level of music.
  • Provide adequate restrooms.
  • Don't let drunk guests drive.
jack-o-lantern.jpg The Real Meaning of Halloween
When I was a kid (some ways still am), I did many Halloween tricks. We would start about three weeks before the date, ring door bells, spool roll a window, soap a window and some tricks I cannot mention. Then on Oct. 31, would dress-up and go and get my big bag of candy at each door.

This is not the real Halloween!

It began about 2000 years ago with the people known as the Celtics. They lived in what is known as England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This was also the new year for the Celtics, a time to give thanks to the sun god for the harvest.

Halloween, All Saints Day. All Hallows Eve or All Souls is a festival of the Christian church. This festival was started as a local festival In 750 AD on November 1, and the name was changed to All Saints Day. Over the following century, All Saints Day spread throughout Europe and became very popular with the celebration starting the night before and continuing through the next day, November 2, and was added later as "All Souls" Day, which made the festival even more popular.

People went around asking for cakes in exchange for prayers for the souls of people's families.  This was later changed to "Trick or Treat."

So I say enjoy your Halloween and don't do the things I did as a kid, and don't forget the real meaning!

Accept Your Phi Theta Kappa Membership Invitation
Kiara Ivory, 2014 Hocking College Early Childhood Education graduate from Cleveland, Ohio, was selected as the Most Distinguished Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She was recognized for this highest honor at the Phi Theta Kappa Nerd Nation Convention in Orlando, Florida in March.
Her Hallmark entry for this award was written by 2014 Business Management and Entrepreneurship graduate Jeff Adams. Hallmarks are the most prestigious awards one can earn in Phi Theta Kappa. Approximately 30 students were recognized as a Most Distinguished Member of Phi Theta Kappa from more than 1,200 chapters worldwide.

This autumn, Ivory became an early childhood education student at Miami University, where she lives in an honors residence hall. Miami offered Kiara a full tuition scholarship as a Phi Theta Kappa transfer student.

"Hocking College helped me have a better transition into Miami than if I had started at Miami straight from high school," Kiara explains. "Phi Theta Kappa helped me make sure I attained good grades in my classes." Through Kiara's involvement at Hocking College, Phi Theta Kappa "has also offered me different scholarships to further my education."

On October 13,2014, Phi Theta Kappa membership invitations were e-mailed to the hocking.edu accounts of 529 eligible Hocking College students. To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have earned a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher, and have completed at least 12 credit hours at Hocking College. Eligible students are encouraged to get involved by taking the orientation online via Moodle's Phi Theta Kappa platform. Students may accept their membership invitation through Friday, December 12, 2014.

Ivory adds, "a student should get involved in Phi Theta Kappa because there are many opportunities available, great friends you will make, amazing experiences, leadership skills you will gain, and many scholarships available to a transfer student. It will help somebody to believe in them self and reach higher."

For more information about Phi Theta Kappa at Hocking College, contact Julie Cohara at [email protected].

Great job!

Kudos on a Successful Campus Group Visit!

Kudos to Mindy Roggow for coordinating this week's group visit by more than 1,000 local eight grade students!

These area students spent time on our campus and at Tri-County Career Center to get a glimpse of how Hocking and Tri-County can shape their future.

The students from Logan, Athens, Miller, Alexander, Federal Hocking, Nelsonville-York, New Lexington and Trimble schools visited both campuses to see what each school has to offer towards career choices.
