Hocking College Named Top Natural Resources Associate Degree Provider
Community College Week has once again named Hocking College the number one Natural Resources and Conservation Associate Degree provider in the United States.

According to data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set (IPEDS) completion survey, Hocking College granted 170 associate degrees in Natural Resources in 2012-2013 academic year. In comparison with the number two spot at 76, Hocking College granted 94 more degrees.

For more than 40 years, Hocking College has used a student centered, hands-on approach to educating their students. The main campus in Nelsonville offers more than 1,200 acres and 80 miles of trails, providing students with the necessary resources to thrive in the natural resources degree and encouraging enthusiasm through exploration and education.

Along with the on-campus amenities, Hocking College is close to multiple parks and nature centers, including Wayne National Forest. However, what really sets them apart from other community colleges is the faculty, who come from various backgrounds and agencies to create a unique team.

Kim Mullen, Dean of the School of Natural Resources said, "While it is certainly an achievement to be selected as a top provider of Natural Resources degrees, we are even more proud of the quality of the Natural Resources degrees offered at Hocking College. We are very pleased to receive this recognition and thankful to the Natural Resources faculty, staff and students who are the reason for this success."

The School of Natural Resources offers 10 associate degree programs, including Ecotourism and Adventure Travel, Equine Health and Complementary Therapies and Natural Resources Law Enforcement. More information can be found by visiting the Hocking College website www.hocking.edu/naturalresources.

Hocking College Police Department Receives Accessible Parking Award

The Ohio Governor's Council on People With Disabilities has awarded the Hocking College Police Department for Accessible Parking Enforcement.

The Accessible Parking Enforcement award is given to departments that show innovative and progressive methods in improving the quality of lives for Ohio residents with disabilities. The Hocking College Police Department is proud to contribute to campus accessibility to increase mobility and community inclusion for people with disabilities.

The department's policy on accessible parking provides designated lots specifically for individuals with disabilities. These areas are regularly patrolled to ensure vehicles present valid and up-to-date permits. Additionally, the Hocking College Police Department has expanded their disability parking during events such as Hocktoberfest and the Nelsonville Music Festival. Updated "Parking Regulations" are distributed to students and faculty to inform them on areas of designated parking and open parking for other individuals.

"I was extremely pleased to receive the award presented by the Ohio Governor's Council for Accessible Parking Enforcement. This award highlights one of the many things our department does for the betterment of the quality of life in our campus community," Adolphus Matthews, Hocking College Chief of Police, said.

2014 Most Distinguished Member of Phi Theta Kappa Encourages Students to Accept Their Membership Invitation
Kiara Ivory, 2014 Hocking College Early Childhood Education graduate from Cleveland, Ohio, was selected as the Most Distinguished Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She was recognized for this highest honor at the Phi Theta Kappa Nerd Nation Convention in Orlando, Florida in March.
Her Hallmark entry for this award was written by 2014 Business Management and Entrepreneurship graduate Jeff Adams. Hallmarks are the most prestigious awards one can earn in Phi Theta Kappa. Approximately 30 students were recognized as a Most Distinguished Member of Phi Theta Kappa from more than 1,200 chapters worldwide.

This autumn, Ivory became an early childhood education student at Miami University, where she lives in an honors residence hall. Miami offered Kiara a full tuition scholarship as a Phi Theta Kappa transfer student.

"Hocking College helped me have a better transition into Miami than if I had started at Miami straight from high school," Kiara explains. "Phi Theta Kappa helped me make sure I attained good grades in my classes." Through Kiara's involvement at Hocking College, Phi Theta Kappa "has also offered me different scholarships to further my education."

On October 13,2014, Phi Theta Kappa membership invitations were e-mailed to the hocking.edu accounts of 529 eligible Hocking College students. To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have earned a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher, and have completed at least 12 credit hours at Hocking College. Eligible students are encouraged to get involved by taking the orientation online via Moodle's Phi Theta Kappa platform. Students may accept their membership invitation through Friday, December 12, 2014.

Ivory adds, "a student should get involved in Phi Theta Kappa because there are many opportunities available, great friends you will make, amazing experiences, leadership skills you will gain, and many scholarships available to a transfer student. It will help somebody to believe in them self and reach higher."

Global Dialogues Film Wins Award

Last year, two Hocking College students, Ndeye Penda Leye and Kaylee Dressing, contributed to the Global Dialogues film, Angel. The film, about child sex abuse, recently won an award at the Icaro Film Festival in Guatemala. Since its release, interest in the film has soared, receiving over 8,000 YouTube views a day.

Penda's fictional story, "Tears of an Angel," depicting the horrific mind games played by child abusers earned her a place in the top 20 out of more than 12,000 international entries to last year's Global Dialogues competition. Global Dialogues then translated her story's concept and ideas into the film. Kaylee, although not a winner of a prize, was credited in the film for her compelling ideas.

Kudos Korner

Kudos on the Ride the Rails Camporee

Tom Pauling, chairman of the Buckeye District Boy Scout Activities Committee, sends the following kudos to Ken Bowald and the staff and students of Hocking College:

On behalf of the Scouts and Scouters of Buckeye District, Simon Kenton Council of BSA, who attended the "Ride the Rails Camporee" last weekend, I want to thank all of those that helped put on a fantastic program.  Comments from the Scouts and their leaders have been nothing but very, very positive.

Although things got off to a "wet" start Friday night, when the sun came out Saturday morning every event was very well received. I think the only negative comment we heard was they did not have enough time in some of the events of which they wanted more.  I even had several adults say they learned something!!!

Thanks for all the effort you put in, as this is one of the BEST Camporees put on by our District. We hope someday we can return and do it again.
