Hocking College Designated Military Friendly School
Hocking College was recently awarded the Military FriendlyŽ Schools title from Victory Media Inc. for the fifth year in a row. The 2015 Military FriendlyŽ Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses as students to ensure their success on campus. Schools were considered that offer scholarships and discounts, veterans' clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those who served. Now in its sixth year, the 2015 list of Military FriendlyŽ Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools nationwide approved for VA tuition funding. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from schools across the country. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year. Specifically, Hocking College prioritizes the recruitment of students with military experience and is one of the top schools for providing the most academic credit for military and civilian credit. Scholarships and tuition discounts are also available to military students and veterans while all military students and dependents are offered in-state tuition without residency requirements. Hocking also allows military students called to active duty to return to school without any penalty. The Military FriendlyŽ Schools media and website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,876 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

Ecotourism Classes Work on Appalachian Trail
The Introduction to Ecotourism classes traveled to the Carolina Mountains and worked on one of this country's premier hiking destinations, the Appalachian Trail near the border of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
For the past five years, the Hocking College Ecotourism and Adventure Travel program has been working with the Smokey Mountain Hiking Club on maintaining part of the Appalachian Trail. This August, part of the work involved redirecting a portion of the trail away from an eroding edge of a mountain.
Each year, the class also learns first-hand about the amazing diversity in ecosystems of the Appalachian range, one of the world's oldest mountain chains. This area in southern North Carolina and extreme northern South Carolina and Georgia is one of the wettest in the Eastern United States, recording more than 100 inches of rain per year. This contributes to a wide variety of waterfalls, rugged terrain, and unique plant life. The area also has a plethora of national forests, state forests, America's most popular national park and many state parks and national wilderness areas.

Kudos to the Financial Aid Department
Kudos to the Financial Aid department on the strong reduction in the college's Cohort Default Rate!
As recently reported by Financial Aid Director Deneene Merchant, last year the college submitted a default management plan based on our 3-Year official Cohort Default Rate (CDR) of 34.1 percent.
Our continued efforts and partnership with USA Funds have resulted in our recent 2-Year official rate of 22.1, a reduction of 12 points.
Great job!
