Suicide Prevention and Education Program Available
Hocking College Counseling Center received a grant this year allowing them to administer the Kognito online suicide prevention and education program to 50 staff members. Hocking College encourages faculty to participate in this program and provide feedback on their experience. Kognito will be open until September 30, 2014. Previous participants have stated the program was very useful and informative. Why take this program? Statistically, more than 1,350 college students commit suicide a year. Almost seven percent of students have seriously considered suicide in the last 12 months. This means that 280 students at Hocking College have seriously considered suicide in the past year. The psychological distress this can cause can affect students' academic achievements and their ability to stay in school. This training is designed to prepare faculty and staff to recognize when a student is exhibiting signs of psychological distress, and manage a conversation with the student with the goal of connecting them with the appropriate campus support service. Access the Kognito program here.
