The Four A's of Stress Management: Alter

"I promise you nothing is as chaotic as it seems. Nothing is worth diminishing your health. Nothing is worth poisoning yourself into stress, anxiety and fear." - Steve Maraboli

This week, the second "A" of stress management.

Alter:  When you are feeling stressed attempt to make changes that can impact your stress levels for the better. If you are frustrated, use "I" statements to express your feeling on the stress source's behavior. If you see a stressful situation arising, change the way you are going about it. The glass can always be half full if you alter your mindset.

Alumni Spotlight

Hocking Alum Named Young Chiropractor of the Year
Hocking College graduate, Dr. Iva Battrell Hughes recently received the South Carolina Chiropractic Association's "Young Chiropractor of the Year" award at the annual convention in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Dr. Hughes attended Hocking from 1991-1993 pursing a degree in accounting. She returned from 1997-1998 to start her educational training to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. After practicing as an L.M.T. in Murfreesboro, TN, she returned home to Albany, OH and worked for a local Athens county chiropractor. Hughes then became a Radiology Technician and also received training as a Functional Capacity Evaluator.

While working at the Athens county chiropractor, Hughes met a young chiropractor, her mentor Dr. John Urban, who saw immense potential in her abilities and encouraged her to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Dr. Hughes returned to Hocking again to finish her prerequisite classes in 2001-2002. She then received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in February of 2006.

Dr. Hughes has been in practice with her husband, Dr. Brian Hughes, and father-in-law, Dr. Douglas Hughes Jr. since 2006. The Hughes family has two offices, one in Rock Hill, SC and the other in Chester, SC. Dr. Hughes not only sees patients in both offices, but she is also the full time office manager for both offices. The Rock Hill practice started in 1939 by Dr. Douglas Hughes Sr., and is still growing through the continued efforts of his son, Dr. Doug Jr., grandson, Dr. Brian and Dr. Iva Hughes. Dr. Iva and Dr. Brian Hughes currently have two sons; Ayden 8 years old and Brady, 6 years old.

Dr. Hughes explains how Hocking College helped her prepare for the real world, "Although I did not expand on my original degree of accounting, I still use the knowledge I gained everyday while managing our thriving practices."

She also mentioned the advantage of being in a smaller class setting and how they helped her in the long run. "By attending more intimate class settings with about 20-30 students, I gained the confidence to succeed once I attended Palmer College, where the class sizes were much bigger, about 150-200 classmates. My previous anatomy and physiology classes I took while getting my Massage Therapy degree at HC gave me a huge advantage over other students at Palmer as well," Dr. Hughes said.

Dr. Hughes' advice for current Hocking College students is simple: get all the education you can, because you never know where it will lead you in the future. "I will never regret gaining knowledge of any kind. Although the original path I chose has obviously veered to a completely different passion, I would not have arrived at this point in my life had I not started my education with Hocking College," Dr. Hughes said.

Visit the Athens Messenger to read more about Dr. Hughes.
Reminder: Free Scrap Tire Drop-Off Events Scheduled for Athens County Residents
The U.S. Forest Service's Wayne National Forest, the Athens-Hocking Solid  Waste Management District and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is hosting a free Scrap Tire Drop-off event for Athens County residents only. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Wayne National Forest Headquarters, located off US Hwy 33 between The Plains and Nelsonville.

Funding for the event comes from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste Management District.

The event has the capacity to collect up to 1200 scrap tires, which will be later recycled. Once we have filled the trailer, we will close the collection site. No tires will be received after hours. No tires will be accepted from tire shops, dealers, or repair shops. No tires exceeding 54 in. in height and/or 16 in. in width will be collected.

"The Wayne National Forest is happy to partner with the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste Management District to collect scrap tires from Athens County residents. Unfortunately, hundreds of scrap tires are dumped on the Wayne National Forest. By hosting events like this, we hope we'll see a reduction in those numbers," said Forest Spokesman Gary C. Chancey.

The public is reminded violators of scrap tire laws could be prosecuted as a felony offense in Ohio with a fine of at least $10,000 but not more than $25,000, or imprisonment for at least two years, but not more than four years, or both.

The event is also being held in support of the mission of Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful, a regional affiliate of Keep America Beautiful that's helping create a healthier and safer place to live, work and play. For more information, visit our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/wayne.
Mission

Hocking College provides a unique, innovative, and quality education in a supportive experience- based learning environment, preparing students for employment and transfer education opportunities, while teaching the value of lifelong learning, promoting diversity and developing citizens who are engaged in their local and global communities.
