 From the President
A New Year, A New Appreciation
Happy New Academic Year!
Those of us who work in the realm of public education have the benefit of planning our work around an annual cycle of beginnings and endings. Today typically marks the beginning of this cycle, with thousands of new or familiar faces coming to us for skills, knowledge and hope. Their faces reflect both excitement and uncertainty, as they continue to pursue a better life for themselves and their families. Even on those days we would rather forget, being a part of a student's personal journey is both a weighty responsibility and a genuine honor.
For me, these are the days in which I pause and imagine the collective efforts going on under our Hocking banner. Across all three campuses and dozens of field-based laboratories, thousands of interactions between our students and our employees are building the future of our country and our way of life. That's what we all do for a living: we build the future, one student at a time.
So whether you share your knowledge with students, or provide them with a hot meal, or clean their restrooms, or sell them their textbooks, or clear their sidewalks, or attract them to campus, or connect them to the Internet, or take their tuition payments, or schedule their classrooms, or calm their fears, please know you do these and so many other things with your president's sincere and lasting gratitude. You are--and always will be--the very heart of Hocking.
Here's to another wonderful year!

From the Provost
And So It Begins...
As usual this will be a very busy week for all of us! So here are a few reminders.
We will have a large number of returning students showing up this week to register, check financial aid, purchase parking passes, make scheduling changes, and the list goes on. So please be patient with our students and with each other.
Remember the students can add and drop this week until Friday, August 29. Next week, September 2 - 5, the students may still drop classes, but in order to add a class they must have permission from the course instructor, and the Add/Drop Form must be signed or stamped by the Provost Office. Remind students that any scheduling changes may impact their financial aid and/or billing.
We are no longer "de-registering" students. If a student wants to withdraw from the institution, they must follow the proper withdrawal procedures (including meet with the Dean or SAC of the program, complete proper paperwork, meet with financial aid and/or cashiers to determine financial impact of the withdrawal.) If the proper paperwork is not filed, the student will be responsible for all charges accrued.
The Student Services Concourse in Light Hall will have extended service hours this week until 6 p.m.
Have a good week --and as always, thank you for your efforts and support.

Change in Payment and Scheduling Policy
This semester, students who do not submit some form of payment will no longer automatically have their class schedules dropped due to non-payment.
Any student that wants to withdraw from autumn semester classes must complete the withdraw process by Sunday, August 24, 2014 to receive a 100 percent refund. Tuesday, September 9, 2014 is the last day to withdraw at an 85 percent refund. Anyone withdrawing after September 9 will owe the full amount of any charges due.
By the first day of class, each student must sign and submit a Hocking College Registration Terms and Promissory Note and establish a method of payment. Students can download the Registration Terms and Promissory Note and submit the form to the Cashier's Office in the Student Services Concourse.
Students who have not established a method of payment for the 2014 autumn semester should contact the Cashier's Office at cashiers@hocking.edu indicating the planned method of payment.

Watering Schedule Set for Indoor Plants
The Campus Greens department has been working hard to beautify the Campus both on the outside as well as now the inside with tropical plants in some of our buildings. They have a water schedule set for these plants as well as the personnel who will be maintaining them.
Please do not water the plants in the common areas of the buildings as they are very sensitive to the amount of water they receive as well as the amount of light. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and enjoy!

Alumni Spotlight
Alum Began Years of Accomplishments at Hocking College
Allan Fernando Discua Cruz graduated from Hocking College in 1994 earning an Associate Degree in Computer Science Technology. Hocking College was the early start of Cruz's career, where he traveled from Honduras to Hocking to begin his education at the age of 15. Cruz was granted a Friendship Scholarship allowing him to complete an associate degree at Hocking College. During his time studying at Hocking College, Cruz was awarded the Dean's List Award for Academic Performance, he became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and he was nominated to receive the National Collegiate Computer Science Award and the All-American Scholar award. Among his many professors, Cruz remembers Gus Morris and Sharon Morel, who taught him the logical world of programming and computer systems. After earning his degree, Cruz returned home to Honduras to help in the family business and study for further education. He continued his education, completing a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Central American Technological University. Cruz also received his MBS at the University of New Haven, Connecticut in 2000 and then completed his master's in manufacturing at McGill University in Canada. Cruz was granted a scholarship to pursue a research degree in Spain and Sweden in 2003. He then completed his Ph.D. at the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom. His Ph.D. thesis, focusing on family business groups, was among the 10 theses across Europe selected for publication in 2009. Cruz then joined the management school at the University of Lancaster as a lecturer in the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development. He has presented his findings in various international conferences and has published in top international peer-reviewed journals and book compilations. Cruz believes that a person never knows where in the world they will end up, yet the skills they learn early at Hocking College will help them overcome many challenges. He encourages students at Hocking to always challenge themselves and use their skills to generate knowledge, improve the societies in which they live in and help others. Today, after all of Cruz's studies, he is a lecturer and also teaches courses related to family business, small business management and innovation. Cruz is involved in various Rotary Clubs and is also involved in the support of local and international projects that affect communities worldwide. In the UK, Cruz is a member of the International Café, and is also a visiting professor in Honduras. Cruz hopes to one day return to Hocking College and share his experiences with fellow academics and students.
